Weekend Update

Sale PSA: Some great price matched items via Nordstrom – adidas Ultraboost shoes, now 30% off (never seen them this low for these colors), the classic Fjallraven backpack, now 25% off (also love this little crossbody!), and a fun loose cotton mini dress from Free People, now $51.

Also: a very cute fleece hoodie from Anthropologie, now just $25, classic Ray-Ban aviators, now $115, and a cute chore coat from Madewell, now 30% off with code HAPPYPLACE.

Also: WOW Moda Operandi has 25% off almost the whole site, with code 25OFF, and SSENSE has 20% off basically the whole site, including LOEWE (do I get a Puzzle??)

First – thank you all so much for your kind comments on my blog anniversary post this week. I’m not going to take up space to gush too much but just wanted to say THANK YOU – I read every comment, email, cherish them all and wish I could reply back to each but am in a 24-7 childcare situation right now. Thank you all so much again!

1. I will not pretend that I wore anything than pajamas this week – not full sets (those are for bed, I still need some delineation) but rather sweatpants and a waffle tee and hoodie. I LOVE waffle shirts and thus have been wearing this one, from Uniqlo, non stop.

To repeat: I love waffle shirts. I recently purchased some cropped ones, but those were for when I went outside, with high waist pants. Now that I’m back to my good ol’ fleece and elastic, it’s my oversized comfortable waffles that are back. Yes, this week’s recommendation is pure comfort.

2. First this piece, via The NYTimes, about whether it feels weird to be shopping online right now. I’m curious about what you all are doing. Are you shopping? I am, but less than before (except for toys and books to distract my children, where my shopping has exploded).

3. Sharing this article, via Nikkei, about Hong Kong denizens selling their luxury bags for some quick cash. I’ve been hearing consignment quotes (when available) are WAY down right now. Makes sense but disappointing, especially as we’re all likely cleaning out our homes and closets this week!

4. I want to know your thoughts about this piece, via Fashionista, about fashion influencers in the age of Covid-19. I’ve actually thought (why, I don’t know) about what role fashion “influencers” will have after this is all over. Does the content seem more meaningless (pot calling kettle black)? Also, so much of the content is around travel?

5. This week, I’m reading The Mirror and the Light, by Hilary Mantel.

I’ve been waiting for this for a WHILE. Not as long as some, because I read Bring Up the Bodies first, and then tried Wolf Hall again (by all of your urging!). And then, after that, worshipped at the feet of Mantel. My God, the way she writes, the attention she has paid to this person and historical moment – it’s the kind of talent and obsession that’s truly inspiring, a pleasure to read, to enjoy. This is a LONG book and I’ve been making this last throughout this very long week – if you like historical fiction, if you like Mantel’s other works, I highly recommend The Mirror and the Light

I am blessed to have a job with steady income and good health. I have shopped some of the sales this week because there have been really good deals on items I needed to buy anyway–bras!–and things I did not need but can put to good use–long-sleeve shirts that form the backbone of my wardrobe and that I am likely to wear for many years. No guilt. I am back to work next week, and I can likely wear it all next week. Part of me wishes I could stay home until it all ends, but my job needs me. And in that respect, it is fine to be needed.

Child-free at 44 with no regrets. I have a lot of respect for those of you who are rearing the future…and very much at home with that future all day long. Strength, Kathy, and may you and the family remain healthy.

My shopping habit does not changed much since the COVID-19 pandemic. I don’t usually shopping much unless I need it. I have bought what I need back in November and December 2019. However, this current situation really helps some people to really focus on what they need and truly want without any “fashion influencer” distraction. It is proven again and again since the war ages and now that gold is excellent investment since it is liquid. Russian Princes and Princesses ran from the revolution with their jewelries to sustain their lives in a new country. History is always repeat itself just in different form. For bag collectors, Hermes and Chanel bags can be an option if the stores could buy the bags in good price.

I’ve been forcing myself to get dressed, but just in jeans and a sweater. However, I’ve been in the same pair of jeans for days….probably 3 or 4. Until I spill something on them, this will continue. I really need to wear a bra so once that’s done, the rest seems a given.

I pretty much wear pajamas all day too. I keep getting tempted to buy matching sets, even though I’ve never particularly needed or wanted them before. And I don’t even need more sweatshirts since my apartment tends to be a little too warm. I’m online shopping about the same amount as before (which is a lot in NYC, because it’s much cheaper to get necessary household staples like paper products or cleaning supplies online than in store), though also trying not to overdo it, particularly with things that are for fun. I did order something from Elizabeth Suzann a few months earlier than originally planned: They made an explicit request that they hoped customers would make online orders now to help keep up payroll (and they’d transitioned their work force to work from home as much as possible too).

Best wishes to you and your family and hoping everyone stays safe and healthy!

In Canada, we are self-isolating so I can go to the markets, but I’m ordering online where I can. So I’m really just online shopping for the basics: food, pharmacy, household goods (and board games since the teenagers are not in school right now.) I bought a couple of Liberty print shirts at J Crew because they were perfect dupes for Isabel Marant and struck me as cheery. Other than that, buying lots of Kindle books, which I consider to be necessities, not shopping! You are in those really high energy years with your kids so I completely hear you on the time shortage in the day. Take care!

The only things I’ve been purchasing online in the last week was rubber stamps for journaling. Nothing else, anticipating global recession. With Movement Control Order over here for a month, I don’t need anything else. My bags, shoes, jewelry and outfits are practically useless. All I need I a cap, face mask, espadrilles with LV Pochette Accessoires for my twice a week grocery run. I don’t even wear a watch when I’m out as I’m no longer rushing, no more of I have only 5 minutes before next meeting, my schedule is full this week, let’s try next week.

Stay safe and keep blogging…perfect timing since almost everyone around the globe is staying home.

Working from home too with an active little boy in tow. I’ve been trying to get out of pajamas after I wake up (BTW – J crew and Target have great matching sets!). It’s been mostly Lululemon all day since it’s comfy and fictional and Birkenstock Gizehs. So I don’t mind buying more comfort clothes. While J Crew has a nice selection of dresses on sale I can’t bear to buy things I won’t be wearing anytime soon.

Hope everyone is staying safe and sane!

    Dear Kat,

I have not been buying anything during this pandemic as I figured this is as good a time as any to really throroughly clean out my cupboards and pantry by eating my way through them. 🙂 KonMari-by-crisis if you will. 😀 That and this article below articulates some of the stress of purchasing stuff and then having to clean it all given all the various beliefs of how long this virus survives on cardboard/plastic etc.

    https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2020/3/27/21195819/mail-groceries-takeout-packages-delivery-clean-sanitize-wipe-outside-coronavirus

That said, in lieu of buying anything for the aforementioned reasons in addition to “shopping my closet” and “storage bins” for clothes and accessories (another way to declutter) I decided to have meals delivered from local restaurants (currently closed but open for delivery) to the local “essential business people” who work near me with whom I have over the years developed a relationship with (e.g. pharmacists, doctor’s offices, post office, etc.).

I think this benefit is two-fold – it assists local small businesses and it provides much needed ‘proof of gratitude’ to many who are overwhelmed and under much stress during this time. It’s nice to feel appreciated but even more so to be shown it. Additionally, a large faction of the “essential business people” oft overlooked are the maintenance and janitorial staffs working at your jobs, your homes, your apartment buildings, etc. Friends of mine who live in buildings and such have been urged to gift these essential employees who have to risk they health and well-being to report to their daily duties with (well, ideally, cash gifts would be preferable but in these times, maybe a gift card or what not) a card and gift (some even gifted with the gift card, a care package which included gloves, masks, and hand sanitizer) or delivery of meals from their favorite local restaurants. Other friends who are now staying home and letting their Nanny’s have a break are also gifting their Nanny’s with paid leave and cards from their kids, but you know, everyone hopefully finds a way to show appreciation to those that help them and their families with whatever they can do – a card a small gesture, any act of kindness (which ideally should be done on the regular) but during times like these are magnified.

Many of my friends and I have given up on influencers long before this outbreak. Partially because it is difficult to find someone you feel has maintained the integrity they started with – which is fine as people should evolve, change and do what they want that makes them happy, but as a result we have found it increasingly difficult to find any blogs (aside from yours) that we enjoy reading. In light of that, if you could possibly cull from your readers in addition to your own any fun sites or worthy blogs (and I am all for lighthearted, non-serious content blogs or websites that require little serious brain use, too) I’d love a post about that especially during times like these where the news is constantly going from bad to worse to yet another nadir period.

One light website I like is boredpanda.com. They usually have varied posts but I veer towards the funny ones. Hope it becomes a “stress release/fun outlet” for you and your readers, too!

    xx

Great article from Vanessa Friedman. I have been buying “nice” loungwear/sleepwear that I couldn’t justify due to price before. At first I thought I’d monitor some other pricey small brands I’d been eyeing until prices dropped, but then decided I want to support them now so they hopefully won’t go out of business. Dudley Stephens and a fair amount of heirloom inspired children’s clothing/shoes have been my most recent purchases.
My husband is really annoyed with me but I decided to keep paying my rent the runway because I love the service so much. I worry if everyone cancelled their membership it would go away.

Since I am working from home I can actually be in lounge wear most of the time, except when my child is on school eLearning Zoom meet I figured out I may appear on the camera (during technical support). So I just wear a sweater top with my lululemon studio pant. Very comfry indeed.
I still check out IG but I don’t follow many KOL(influencer) anyway. I like card making and just seems to me that there are more postings these days probably because more people stay home and craft.
As for shopping it seems quite a lot of places doing mid season sales I struggle to online shop but still bought few things. I also switch my focus to Canadian site. I lived in Canada but relatively close to the border I used to take advantage of the free US shipping and just ship package to parcel storage place and I would drive there to get my package. Minimal storage fee and seldom pay any duty. Whereas shipping to Canada I have got charged huge brokerage fee. But now border crossing is banned so I have to be cautious about shipping fee and duty.
Wish everyone stay healthy and best regards,
    Petti
