Weekend Update

1. Are you a hoodie person? I’m a hoodie person. And this is by far my favorite hoodie right now.

I was so happy when I got this hoodie. It is pretty much everything that I wanted – a nice big hood, lined with fleece on the inside, and most importantly the length – covers the butt but it has that slit on the side so it doesn’t look super baggy and also gives some more visual interest. And the price is great! One of my favorites from Everlane for quite some time and I think I need both the violet and black.

2. A NY Times piece that I missed from a few months back, about the cuts Conde Nast is having to undertake as it tries to achieve some semblance of profitability. Do you read magazines anymore? I took a break for a while but recently I’ve returned some, it’s just different than online. More relaxing.

3. Thank you Len, for this great article on the tragedy of “common cashmere” which I’d otherwise never have found. Do you buy “cheap” cashmere? I do/did with varying results. Uniqlo is the best cheap cashmere, I’ve found; the best overall in my books is still Chanel but I know I’m way overpaying.

4. An absolutely fascinating article, via the WSJ, about the retirement wealth gap, as seen through a dispute in a retirement community about pickleball courts. This was a really great read.

5. This week I read Standard Deviation, by Katherine Heiny.

One of the greatest things about getting to know more about the publishing industry are all the new books I have discovered. Honestly, before I wrote one myself I really didn’t know just how many books are put out each year. There are so many! And the frustrating thing is you know there are some gems that you would love, you just don’t know what they would be, so you rely on recommendations (which I guess is why I started doing this weekly book thing!). So anyway, I was at my local store, and asked for their recs from last year that maybe weren’t so heavily featured anymore, and someone pointed me to this one. I took it home and love it. Standard Deviation is about quite a few things…second marriages, life with a child with Aspergers, marriage in general. If you like Nora Ephron/Lorrie Moore you will love this one, and Heiny is a very, very clever and witty writer. However it isn’t really a “tons of stuff happens” book which is fine with me, but if you’re in the mood for a thriller I might go somewhere else. But otherwise, I highly recommend Standard DeviationLoved it.

Happy Friday! Which size did you get the Everlane hoodie in? Also, have you seen Celeste Ng’s essay in The Cut? Have a great weekend!

I think you can definitely tell between various levels of cashmere. But, I think the best lower priced cashmere I’ve purchased has been by the brand Halogen, I’m always surprised at the quality for the prices I’ve paid. I do love Vince for cashmere, I like that they make both thicker weight and thinner cashmere so you can use it at various points in the seasons. I don’t quite have the budget for Chanel, etc. so I can’t comment there but I do love the look of their sweaters!

Happy Friday! Loved the hoodie recommendation! Just in time for the drop of temperature here on the east coast.

I buy more Kindle for this reason, or I give to friends, and there’s also a few of those little “Free libraries” where I live, which always makes me happy!
