Weekend Update

Sale PSA: Awesome pink cargo pants from Tibi, now 50% off , a pretty tiered dress from Cinq a Sept, now 40% off, and a great slip skirt from J.Crew, now up to 50% off.

1. This week, sharing this plisse dress, from Madewell.

I love this dress! To be honest I think it is “inspired” by this Toteme dress, which I have long admired. So maybe I’ll wait for a sale and get the Toteme. But in general I like this style – the long length and the crumpled style. You don’t have to worry about wrinkles.

2. An interesting article, via Fashionista, about why/how luxury shopping is getting even more exclusive.

3. A thought provoking piece, via the NYT, as to whether supermodels age or are just airbrushed. I agree that these women are the GOAT at any age.

4. An article, via the NYT, about how the US might improve its sunscreen selection. I’m always so grouchy about how bad our sunscreen is over here. It is the first thing I buy on any other continent!

5. This week, I read Cathedral, by Raymond Carver.

I was in a short story mood and specifically a Carver one. I hadn’t read this before, and found it more sparse than his later work and yet also in some ways more powerful. I read a story a night and it was like a quiet little trip for my brain…and I don’t think I have to say this, but just in case, this is not if you are looking for a fast paced thriller! If you are looking for a wonderful literary read however, I highly recommend Cathedral.

Cathedral is wonderful! You describe the writing style perfectly. I love Carver and have read all his work. Love Tess Gallagher too. I recently went through all Susan Minot’s works and am still in a short story/poetry mood. Have you ever read Evening? It was probably you who suggested it! 🙂
Writing that is concise really appeals to me right now.

What sunscreen do you purchase abroad? Brand/ingredient recommendations, por favor?

The best sunscreens I have tried are from Japan. The Bioré one is excellent, but one really awesome find is the Nivea UV Super water gel SPF50. There is a special formulation in Japan that’s absolutely the best I ever tried.
