Weekend Update

Sale PSA: Shearling loafers from Loewe, now $298, a henley sweatshirt from Madewell, now $298 with code RELAX, some Arc jeans from Everlane, now $39 (I love the shape of these), and a simple v-neck dress from Vince, now $117.

1. This week, I bought these sneakers, from New Balance:

I first clicked on these because I liked the color combination, and then was very pleasantly surprised by the price! I still don’t know what $75 sneakers are like – they are arriving soon and I will report back. I’ve always had good experiences with New Balance though.

2. I thought this piece, via THR, was very interesting, about certain Hollywood celebrities who won’t get vaxxed. I didn’t know about any of these people! In my opinion they need to get the shot…can’t believe you would be able to put an entire production (and people’s jobs) at risk.

3. Continuing on my trend of posting articles that I found while googling Amy Smilovic, the founder of Tibi – I enjoyed this Coveteur piece, about personal style vocabulary.

4. The best article this week is this piece in the NYT: Who Is The Bad Art Friend?

5. This week I read Still Life, by Louise Penny.

I’ve seen Louise Penny books for years. I’d always been told she was the “cozy mystery” type which isn’t my favorite sort to read – I guess I thought it would be very twee. But I decided to give her a try, starting with the first in her detective series. And I really enjoyed it. The writing was great, the plot interesting, none of it predictable. If you’re looking for a quiet, well written mystery, I highly recommend Still Life.

That article you shared is SO enthralling. I had to take a work break to read it all the way through. Thank you!

I find it interesting that Mindy Kaling advised her Twitter followers not to read Who Is The Bad Art Friend? because it is boring to her.

After reading it, Dorland was without a doubt disliked by Larson and the writer’s group, although I do commend Dorland or donating her kidney. She is proof that kind people do exist and I wish someone did use her kidney.
But would I do it? Like Larson and friends, nope, given the high risk post surgery and not knowing where the kidney goes at the end. (And as you can see from the link below, Larson did envision where that kidney went.) For that, I do commend Dorland and I don’t think she deserve to be mocked and ridiculed for her altruistic act although The Kindest did in a sense.

As for Larson…I feel like it was a race issue at first. White woman attacking Asian writer and asking for credit. But after that last piece of evidence where Larson wrote she was scared because she knew she didn’t change the letter because she felt the letter Dorland wrote on Facebook was perfect…well, what can I say?..looks like Larson will lose the case. Will Larson win the case for defamation given she is Asian and attacked by a white woman claiming to be the basis of Rose, a kidney donor, in her Kindest book? Ha. Good luck. Her defamation is caused by her mockery of “her friend.” Race has nothing to do with it.

So the fictional character Rose was based on a real person in a sense despite the entire “The Kindest” wasn’t based on Dorland and was a form of art. Either way, don’t mess with the real kind lady. I hope Dorland wins even though she may not have been the most likeable in that writer’s group because what they perceived as “see how kind I am and altruistic” complex. The Kindest may be a good literary read, but too bad it was written out of mockery to another..and some plagiarism.

It is interesting how life imitates art. I remember an article I read on Selena Gomez and her friend donating her kidney to save save her…but instead of taking care of the “new” kidney, Selena did the opposite and drank alcohol to cover her depression. Not exactly the path to taking care of a new kidney. Larson’s story did come out before I read Selena’s story…for that, Larson does deserve props on what it would be like if the donation was less than grateful!

Larson’s Gabe Dove story was a good read as well. She has good promise as a writer, but I’m afraid she’ll need to own up to the plagiarism she did for the Kindest. She should have when Dorland asked for $8,000. Now, she may need to get a restraining order if she wants Dorland to stop showing up at her events. I would be pale white too if I was Larson and Dorland showed up to my events. It is harassment in Dorland’s part? Maybe…but she also showing she won’t be a victim of “mean” writers.
