No Supply

Sale PSA: A cocoon sweater blazer from J.Crew, now 40% off with code GOBIG, a fleece sweatshirt from Everlane, now $27, a great option for a cropped organic cotton hoodie, now just $23, a very cute flannel shirt jacket from Madewell, now up to 30% off with code GOSPREE, a nice selection of dresses from D’Ascoli (I just discovered this lovely brand) at 40% off, and Net-A-Porter has 25% off a selection of beautiful items (I am eyeing this Tibi dress), with code 25OFF

I decided to get some new loafers this weekend, these cool big chunky Gucci ones I’ve been wanting. And I decided to try and get them in person, so I could have an excuse to go to the mall (ran out of things to do to amuse the kids). Sooo off I went to the mall, excited to have something to actually do, besides eat McDonald’s and buy green juice, and the store didn’t HAVE them! They were out! They said it would at least be a few weeks, and then I thought okay, if I’m going to spend this much on shoes, I might as well see what other items are available, and so looked around, and everything was out too. And so then I went home that evening, and went online, and everything was sold out TOO. At full price! The various items I tried to purchase:

Hermes loafers. Well I did get to try these on, but I didn’t realize that the tops are lined in canvas (?) and I definitely needed my exact size. Which were not available. And neither was the color I wanted. As it usually goes with Hermes.

Gucci loafers. As covered above. Well they are on the Gucci site. But also with a few weeks wait.

Prada mules. Available at an insane (in my opinion, for Prada) price of $900. Surely they’d be available, right? But no, sold out in black on all department store sites, in ALL sizes, until something like February 2022! Incredible! And then I tried the loafer version, and of course those are all out as well! Until March 2022!

And then, giving up on shoes, I decided f*** it, I’ve had a really stressful few weeks, I’m going to get my dream Row blazer…only to realize that it was out as well. And then I decided to try my second choice Row blazer…and that was all out too! At least in my size (I’m usually a 0 for The Row, especially for their oversized styles), and honestly, if I’m paying full price for The Row, I want my exact size, right?

And then, I realized I was in a sort of crazy, insane, toxic spiral. The sort where you decide you are going to get something, and then that something becomes anything, you’ve just got to buy, and I stopped myself. Because it was insane. And it’s also crazy because I’ve got a closet full of stuff, and I don’t need anything, but that’s just consumerism, and it isn’t as if I’m anti consumerism (if so I’m doing a very bad job), and there is something going on with supply these days, which I’m sure is the result of all sorts of larger macro factors. So anyway a bunch of thoughts got jumbled in there but the end conclusion is: I don’t need anything right now.

So….thanks for reading along, as I worked this out. Have you all been encountering this low supply issue?

Amanda Mull has a great column on consumerism in The Atlantic and wrote a great article on why everything is sold out: https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2021/09/pandemic-supply-chain-nightmare-slow-shipping/620147/

Well! it is not just stuff that is disappearing.

Not just new merchandise is disappearing! I took my garden clippers in to the hardware store to be sharpened. They are the best on the market for small hands & quite pricey. I’m doing the landscapers work too…

They disappeared from a thoroughly reputable, long established hardware store we relied on for twenty years.

Owner very apologetic and offered to pay for a replacement. That’s when I discovered good clippers are no longer available.

I wanted to get the apple watch new model and the exact same thing happened: went to the store and it was all sold out. Finally ordered online but would have to wait for 6 weeks. Many other things too. Supply chain issues from the pandemic I heard.

Yes, just recently with my kids’ shoes. My son wanted a specific pair of high end sneakers that just came out. It took me weeks to track down a pair, they were an expensive full priced item. I thought it odd that all the stores could be out of a kids item in that price category. Same problem with my daughter’s Gucci mules and we still haven’t tracked down a pair. My mom is also still waiting for her Hermes bracelet to arrive, it’s been months.

I keep hearing that getting Christmas presents will be hard this year and I’m starting to get worried. We had problems last year when we tried to buy two Honda motorcycles for the kids and every Honda dealer in California was out of them and wouldn’t be able to deliver them until March. I think this year will be worse. I plan on doing all my shopping as soon as Halloween is over.

Haha. I did the same thing last night after seeing your psa about the matchesfashion 15% off over the weekend. After hunting for the perfect item to get to the free delivery threshold (was trying to buy a rue de vernueil bag) I decided I don’t. need. anything. But it’s always fun to look!

Yes! I was in Hermes the other day and my SA was complaining she had nothing to sell – and it was going to be that way for awhile. I ordered a car months ago and was told it will be delivered – but retrofitted later to install a missing microchip due to supply chain woes. Went in search fo champagne and was told big shortages of Moët, Veuve. Seriously never seen it like this!

Hm, I wonder if this means it is a good time to consign some items that are taking up space in my closet!

Yes, the piano market is currently just like the real estate market: no inventory, high demand, and long delivery times. The piano I ordered for my 4 and 6 year old is delayed and I’m to wait 6 months.

Ordered a new couch in June and was told I would be lucky if it arrives by Christmas.

Before purchase my Gucci mules I looked into the Hermes mules but as soon as I realized that it is canvas lined I dipped and got the Gucci ones instead and I love it!

It’s almost like the world is helping you meet your own stated goals (in multiple blog posts) about buying less, owning less, being a better environmentalist, etc. Seize that and keep reminding yourself you need nothing. There’s no better way to be an environmentalist by using what you have until it disintegrates.

Oh no, some rich people are inconvenienced by not being able to buy more stuff ! Do write about it and whine about it.

WOW. So mean. You know this is a fashion blog, right? And you’re presumably here because you want to be? Maybe a BigLots shopping blog might be more to your liking.

I’m in Asia and the supply problem doesn’t seem as bad although I don’t know about Hermes, Gucci and Prada loafers. Maybe we are nearer to China and Europe than America is. I do know that furniture makers who do mainly export to America here are backlogged on orders due to prolonged lockdowns. Freight charges have also been increasing. I’ve noticed that imported foodstuff have gotten more expensive too.

We’re looking at no supply for the car we’re going to need. I wish we’d decided to go for it six months before we did, before the shortage was quite so bad. We had intended to hold off for a few more years and discovered that’s not an option so now we’re just waiting for something we need to come in. Otherwise we’ve been ok so far. I indulged in a stack of fabrics for a holiday gift project and that doesn’t look like it’s coming anytime soon so that might be saving myself from overcommitting anyway.
