Weekend Update

Sale PSA: Stan Smiths from adidas, now just $48, a lovely Jo Malone travel size fragrance set, now $98, a warm padded trench coat from Uniqlo, now $60, an oversize flannel shirt from Madewell, now 40% off with code BIGTIME, and this J.Crew cashmere cardigan I know several of us have been chasing, is now 20% off.

1. Today instead of posting some luxury goodie (though I do like sharing those!) I’m sharing a recent purchase I’ve made I’m very excited to receive: these cool air plants!

I’m very into this shop in general. All their goodies look great. And I’m very intrigued by the concept of air plants, which you soak in water periodically and which then don’t require water/soil at at all. The decorating options! I’ve been buying little plants to go all over our house – I’m excited for these because I think they’ll be fun for the kids to take care of and display in clear glasses.

2. For those looking for a long true crime read: check out this tragic and fascinating piece, on the Candy Montgomery case, via Texas Monthly (I love TM!). And beware, it is an addictive two-parter!

3. Sharing this piece, via the NYTimes, about how the luxury e-commerce wars are heating up.

4. I think most of you probably heard about the tragic passing of Tony Hsieh, the founder of Zappos. This Forbes piece has more about his life and events leading to his death. The WSJ also has a good article, but it might be paywalled.

5. This week I read The Return, by Hisham Matar.

I enjoyed this very much. It is non-fiction, chronicling Matar’s return to Libya, where his father was arrested and never heard from again years earlier. I will be clear up front: this is a tragic story! But not without hope. I liked it because it was both personal but also because I was able to learn a little more of Libya’s history, a country that fascinates me. And the writing is excellent, clean and eloquent. If you’re looking for a good non-fiction/memoir, I highly recommend The Return.

That Farfetch article is so interesting. I honestly thought Farfetch would do worse through the pandemic, because who has $$ to spend on bags when people are losing their jobs? But maybe shopping to fill the void outweighs practicality right now (I’m certainly guilty of this!). Just trotted off to take a look at Farfetch and maybe pick up a few stocks.

I have the J. Crew cashmere cardigan in the spruce green color. The color is a beautiful dark blue/cool green. The fit is quite generous: I would normally be a medium and I bought a small…and I might could have gone down to an extra small. The excess is most noticeable in the sleeves and under the arms. I am 4’11” and it hits me just under my stomach. Quality seems good. I have only worn it once, but there was no pilling, so we are off to a good start. It is medium weight.

Re: Tony Hsieh, Jewel is right: there is no cheating on sleep. Sleep repairs the cells and the brain; we evolved to need it for good reasons.

    Happy holidays Katharine.
