On Leggings

Sale PSA: The classic Brixton Gucci’s in black are currently price matched for $730 (the Ace sneakers are also 10% off), a very cute fuzzy cardigan from Madewell, now $52 with code NICEONE, and a classic denim jacket from Everlane, now $62.

This week, a very important topic…yes, leggings.

I never realized until doing a much needed “pajama/legging drawers” clean out this weekend just how many leggings I have. I have a LOT, especially for someone who doesn’t uh….exercise (I walk!! Walking is great!). They’re one of those items I accumulate but don’t think much about – on sale? Okay, why not pick up another Zella? Historically when they’d arrive I dutifully snip off the tags and wash them and kind of just stuff them away and forget about them, like underwear. But since it’s getting colder and because of yes, the PANDEMIC, I have been spending more time in my leggings. And actually realize that there is a big difference. There are pairs I love and pairs I love not so much. I’ve tried to be conscientious about other areas of my wardrobe…now I’ve decided to only buy leggings that I really love and which are super all around. And as such, here are some of my experiences with the various leggings in my closet (including my favorite):

Gap Blackout Leggings: I bought these during one of those ubiquitous 40% off sales. They are nice! Soft and stretchy. They feel very “technical” but what do I know? Definitely very very casual and gym like. I also have Old Navy leggings and never wear them – they are stiff and just not pleasant. I don’t even see them on the site anymore.

Everlane Perform: I tried these in black a few months ago. I liked them but actually did not keep them because at this point, I realized that I had many pairs and thus did not need more, unless they were perfect.

These were overall fine…I’m trying to remember, I do recall that I found them a little too shiny. I have lots of “shinier” leggings and I only realized now that I prefer them more matte! So yes.

I took XS-Ankle in them and they fit great.

Lululemon Align II: These are actually my favorite. It was very sad for me to discover this because they are $98. But I like the variety in sizes and lengths. I have these in both 2 and 4…which I also just found out (I thought they were the same size before) because I like one pair more than the other, because it’s looser, and yeah, that’s the 4! They are matte and super soft. I have heard that these are not good for heavy duty exercise but I do not do heavy duty anything right now. SO buttery soft and perfect and I love that the waist is both high rise and doesn’t cut in at all with elastic or anything.

Zella Live In 7/8/: These are probably my second favorite after the Lululemon. Great material, comfortable. Slightly more “compression” than the Lululemons which I don’t really care about (I’d rather ah…non compressed). I only buy them on sale and if you’re thinking about a pair wait until the holiday sale period next month, they’ll probably go.

Yogalicious Capris: I bought these awhile ago after hearing somewhere (A blog? YouTube?) that they were a good version of the Lululemon leggings I like so much. They are okay! I guess I don’t feel they are a good comparison to the Lululemons…maybe something to do with comfort? The waistband is tighter (I take a XS in these) but the length is the same. They also seem a tad flimsier. But for 25% of the cost? A good option to try. For me though, since I’m focusing now on having less even if at the expense of some extra $$ paid, I’d probably stick to my Lululemons.

Also, if you want to try these, make sure to get the black NON lux – not the lux. The lux is shiny.

Nordstrom High Waist Crop Leggings: These are pretty sheer and I actually only use them for wearing underneath dresses, etc for a layering look in winter. I bought them because I was looking for a cotton pair with some stretch and these are exactly what they are. They cannot be used as “pants” unless you are particularly bold. Very comfortable and sometimes I just like the feel of cotton versus all these synthetic materials.

One brand I haven’t tried yet: Athleta’s 7/8 leggings. I’ve looked at the Elation several times but I guess the price is so close to Lululemon’s that I’d rather go with one I know I’d use. If anyone has any feedback, do let me know!

Alright, even though I suspect there are other leggings lurking in my closet I haven’t gotten to, I think this is enough for now. What are your favorite leggings?

I love my TNA leggings. I have like 5 pairs of them. The basic black for most days and warmer pairs for cold weather outdoors.

Zella and Hue (but only the heavier weight ones). Too scared to count how many I have total, LOL.

I love my Athleta leggings. These are all that I wear. Being short 5’2, I get them in 7/8 and capri which means that they hit me at the ankles. Best of all, they come with big pockets on the side which fits a big phone and some styles come with a big zipped pocket in the back for keys. Ooh, I love love so much. I wear them for running, for lounging, for sitting on my ass. If you are not a runner, I would avoid the tech fabrics which do feel tackier and more shinny after a while (plus side, they dry ultra fast). They come with a no fuss return policy. I highly recommend buying a few designs and just trying them out until you find the best style. I tried Gap, Zella, and Old Navy but they do not feel as good on my skin and rarely come with the BIG side pockets and zippered back pocket that I adore and absolutely love. Big pockets = love.

I can recommend the Athlete Elation. I am about your height, and the 7/8 is the perfect length, cutting off right at my ankle bone or a tiny bit above. They are not perfectly matte but not shiny at all, They are very soft and sort of “peachy” to the touch, very comfy, high-rise but not tight at the waist. I only wear them for exercise–Pilates, running–because I am self-conscious about the back view of my upper thigh/butt area, but with a tunic-length t-shirt, button down or sweater I would consider wearing them for walking, running after kids, etc. They make a great navy, if you like that as a change from black. Per your recommendation I’m going to try the Lululemon!

I love the Salutation Stash Pocket II 7/8 Tight in Powervita! https://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=531321#pdp-page-content Comes in petite, the pocket is really useful and fabric feels soft yet substantial. I don’t work out in leggings, but I am constantly bouncing btwn 2 kids so that constitutes as being active in my book!

I’ve also heard that the aerie offline real me crossover high waist leggings are great…

I personally love the aerie OG leggings. Despite not being the high waist version they are already fairly high waisted, and the OG collection is their cotton line, which I prefer to more technical fabrics (the Real Me line is not natural fiber). Happily, the OGs are also super cheap! About $20 USD regular price, and they’re regularly on sale. They also come in a short length! I’m 5’2″ and the regular length goes past my ankles, so I could have used their short length but they sell out quick.

I’m a huge fan of the Lululemon Fast and Free tights because of the phone pocket. These are the only leggings I work out in. For lounging around the house, I favor simple cotton leggings by Hue.

Beyond Yoga leggings. They are so soft while still completely opaque. Have a very high rise and nice band at the top for some light compression. I’ve abandoned my OV and lululemon leggings for them.

I was always a trousers > leggings person until pregnancy, when I had terrible veins and needed to wear compression daily. These are the best:
    https://www.rejuvahealth.com/products/sigvaris-soft-silhouette-maternity-leggings
They are soft, comfortable, and actually opaque, with graduated compression. A non-maternity version also exists. I wore them daily in black for work (in a hospital on my feet) with button down maternity tunics (thank you Poshmark) and flats. I felt comfortable and reasonably professional which was tough given the constraints.

These are very similar to the Aligns at a fraction of the price. I have them in 4 colors and live in them!

Second best for me are the Uniqlo Airism UV Protection Soft Leggings. They’re less stretchy than the Aligns but still extremely comfortable with a nice hold.

Spanx! Not really for working out, but perfect for lounging. Fun textures, comfortable, and do a great job holding you in with zero digging.

Leggings! I love leggings although I’m not one to wear them as pants outside the house – except under a dress or huge sweater (but this is a look I love). For wearing as actual clothes, I love Zella the most.
For workouts, I do a ton of hard mat work and usually need really thick leggings to avoid mat burn, and the best I’ve found are Sweaty Betty Super Sculpt. They are STUPIDLY overpriced, but thick, soft, and tough. Also they make you look amazing! I would like a pair in black to wear as “clothing” but….SB doesn’t make this style in solid black – crazy, right? I do like Athleta Elation for a workout legging that’s less stressful on the knees, like running or barre. They are a little too spandex-y for wearing outside a workout IMO.

Ahhh leggings! Have you tried the Lululemon In Movement ones? While I love the Align leggings I wear them carefully because the fabric is delicate and pills easily. The In Movements are made from smooth, more pull resistant material. They feel so good!

I wear leggings everyday. I’m in the medical field and I always have a layer underneath my scrubs. I love the Everlane Perform leggings!! They have become my favorite. No pilling, good compression, high waisted, very lightweight, they are just unbeatable. I don’t find them shiny but it does have that slick ultra-smooth looking. I have 3 pairs and rotate them with Zella, Alo Yoga, or Lululemon for the rest of the week.
When it’s cold I wear Ann Taylor’s knit leggings. Not sure if they still have them but they are thicker material with a waistband. I have 5+ pairs because I wear them all the time when the season is right.

Woolx merino wool. They’re awesome and good for 9 months out of the year (too hot for humid NE summers) but great all other seasons. Also use has an underlayer when traveling to cold places (took them to Iceland to layer under hiking pants and I didn’t bring snow pants!) and layer under a sweater dress for winter time.
I might buy another pair but they don’t smell bad so I get away with wearing them for a week at a time.

My favourite are from aritzia. They have a pair that are super soft (forget the name) but they are the around $60 Canadian. Every time I go back to Canada (I live in Hong Kong) I stock up on them as they are my goto comfort pants for fall winter !! Highly recommend them !

My favorite leggings are from American Eagle out of all places. This one, to be exact: https://www.ae.com/us/en/p/aerie/leggings/7-8-leggings/offline-real-me-high-waisted-crossover-legging/0708_5104_073?menu=cat4840006

I want to live in them forever.

They are just the best. You should try them out. Generous sizing though, so take one size below your usual size.

For just lounging and comfort, I love James Perse leggings. Soft soft cotton, the best. They won’t hold you in or anything but they are so comfy. I’m a big fan of James Perse tees too. To me they are perfect.

Does anyone know leggings that aren’t made of plastic ? Please ? I have been waiting for a pair since forever. I refuse to wear Lululemon plastic for lounging. Every wash contributes to micro plastic pollution that all of us have to eat through food/air/water – for the sake of lounging !!! Any cotton recommendations please ?

James Perse are 100% cotton, last time I checked. Eileen Fisher might make them in organic cotton too. And on the less expensive side Pact is also great although they have a percentage of stretch in them. I’m with you, I hate wearing plastic, although I do from time to time. Also wash with a guppy bag but the manufacturing process is definitely problematic.

I love Onzie and they have been our favorite brand to carry in studios based on how well they hold up. Their dream pant is also, well, a dream:).

I have the same ranking and practically live in my Aligns 🙂
A friend told me that the Aerie Offline leggings are similar to the Align but cheaper though apparently they show sweat stains much more easily if you use them for working out.
My other friend says she likes these even better than the Lulus but I haven’t tried them – https://ivlcollective.com/collections/leggings

Definitely try the Athleta 7/8 Elation! I have way too many pairs of these “just in case.” Sooo soft and matte with slight compression but they don’t feel tight or uncomfortable AT ALL. So comfy with a high waistband. Perfect for petites! I’m only 4’ 11” but they’d still be great for someone 5’ 4” and under.
