On Coats (Again)

Sale PSA: A simple and loose cotton minidress from Madewell, now 60% off, ruffled sneakers from AGL, now 40% off, simple leather espadrilles from Everlane, now $74, and the fluffy yarn fleece jacket from Uniqlo, now $25 for a limited time.

How were your weekends? I’m writing the last bits of this post right now on Monday morning. Distance learning is killing me!

Anyway. Recently, I managed to purge some coats from my closet. I was very proud of myself. I sold one, sent two to The Real Real, and donated another. Was patting myself on the back about all the empty closet space (outerwear does take up LOTS of room)…only to find myself these last few weeks thinking about fall wardrobe…and how much I’d like a nice new coat for fall! To stop myself (OK, I have allowed that I will get one more this season, but you know, this season ahead shall be LONG and stressful so I must bide my time) I decided as a delaying tactic to share some of my favorite coat brands in my closet and how my experiences with them have changed over time.

Max Mara: I love Max Mara. Who doesn’t? Some of my all time favorites are still from Max Mara, including one short black jacket that’s more than a decade old. But lately it’s been hard for me to see the value in some of their coats. Don’t get me wrong, I can see the QUALITY in their main line – but $4K (and above? And now they have so many diffusion brands (S’ Max Mara, Weekend, SportsMax, etc) that it kind of confuses me because the styling can look very similar. For example: the gorgeous Manuela. So beautiful, so classic, (and not even the most expensive coat the brand has, by far). But then this one from their Weekend line is a fraction of the price, and okay, the material isn’t camel hair, but still looks quite good, etc etc. For many pieces, I find it hard to understand/justify the prices charged. And of course, if you’ve ever checked out the prices at a Max Mara boutique in Europe…it’s even harder to go back to US prices. The retail prices in Europe are literally half off.

J.Crew: I actually think J.Crew is underrated as an outerwear brand. Due to its ah…less than stellar management over the years it seems to have kind of gone from the “American classics” perception to more of a fast fashion one…which is sad because they still make a lot of great items. I think their coats are always well priced, well done, have nice details, and can usually be found at least 40% off if you wait a little bit. One of my favorite coats is from J.Crew (maybe from eight or nine years ago). They have a GREAT green shade this year. I have a thing for green coats.

Theory: The OG of making this style coat above (the Clairene) and still does the best iteration, in my opinion. Wait for a Friends/Family sale to get this one since it always qualifies! Actually I just realized it is on sale at Theory now, for their friends/family, and at Saks, too! BUT the one downside of Theory is that at full price, I definitely feel that it is too expensive…and for similar/better quality and at lower prices, I’d check out:

The Curated: I reviewed their classic coat earlier in the year and still am very happy with the purchase. They recently came out with a size XXS which is a great option for petite ladies. I kind of like mine though, it is nice and comfortable and oversized and I like having the option to wear thick sweaters underneath without feeling encumbered at all.

What are your favorite coat brands? Any specific ones you’re picking up for fall?

My favorite coats are also from J.crew! I used to stalk ebay for petite sizes of the 100%wool or wool/cashmere blends from several years ago (maybe more like a decade ago!). I recently moved to Socal tho and definitely don’t need 5 wool coats (maroon icon trench, long navy duffle, black overcoat, short colorblocked hooded, short camel peacoat) but they’re all so pretty that I can’t give them up!

I’m with you, Kat – I also have a coat addiction (although a bit more justifiable living in northern Virginia. How many animal print coats does one need, though? I love “the coat” and don’t understand how some people can limit themselves to just a few. You are certainly right about the space issue – and shearlings? Space hogs! 🙂

You know, I also live in Northern California and find that I never reach for coats anymore. I have a couple of lovely ones that I haven’t put on in years. Instead, I have three puffers of varying levels of formality, a long 3 in 1 parka, and a fleece lined field coat, all Patagonia. While I love the look of a good coat, I find actually wearing them to be cumbersome and heavy, whereas a light warm puffer is delightful. I can move in it easily and find it cosy too. Admittedly, I also love my comforter, super lofty, light and warm, so I think my preferences just skew in that direction.

Honestly I do also love my puffers. And you hit upon a great point – they are easy to move in and light. I am also a comforter person. Something I have to think about!!

I love J Crew coats! Last year I picked up some Teddy bear coats and fun faux fur coats last year. I love Patagonia too for the same reasons as Hadilly. Last year, I also got a cream Gucci wool coat. It’s a crazy color to own but I feel really chic and luxe and spoiled in it!I have to tell myself not to look at coats for now though…

Gah, love coats too! And love Max Mara! It was a sad sad day when I discovered that moths had gotten to my Max Mara coat, a chocolate brown beauty that was ten years old and got me compliments every time I wore it. How does The Curated coat compare to Theory? I live in the Bay Area so don’t need too much coat, feel as if the Theory might be perfect. But The Curated coat looks delicious.

The Curated fabric quality is slightly better but I wish they had a cropped version! if they had a shorter version like Theory’s I’m almost certain it’d be better fabric and like half the price. But the Theory is worth it if you’ll wear it tons, it’s better to pay more for something you will use!

Hi Kat, the MaxMara coat is on my buy list this year since I had trips to Europe all planned out! Unfortunately, travel is out of the question because of Covid and MaxMara prices is the US are much higher. I actually own 8 Theory Clairene Cashmere/Wool Coats. Please don’t judge or laugh. I am petite so the length is perfect on me (mid thigh) and easy for me to rotate throughout the week. My office (pre Work at Home) was semi-formal and the Clairene was perfect for both weekends and meetings. Plus, I am lazy and tend to buy multiples. I recommend the coat for mild winters (I’m in So Cal) but quality-wise, I do notice piling after a period of wear. I am very interested in the Curated coat but wish that it comes in a shorter length.

H Kat, my favorite Clairene coats in terms of colors are periwrinkle blue (2018 color), the original beige/camel (their first release), and lavender (2019 color). I also have these colors in burgundy, black, dark grey, yellow, dark pink, and the newer dark camel (2020). OMG, that’s 9 coats but they work well for me. I love the lighter colors because they are flattering color-wise and the sheen of the wool/cashmere mix shows beautifully in lighter colors. I’m 5’2 and the coat reaches mid thigh on me and I can wear a light sweater. My office is freezing cold and on casual Fridays, I can throw them over leggings and a shirt and still look professional for a meeting. However, as I am typing, I realize that 9 coats are a lot especially when I barely wear the other colors. But I do like having them on hand as they make me very happy whenever I do wear them.

Kat, I forgot to mention that I purchased a scarf from you (purple) while you had those beautiful designs! I love my scarf and the color looks amazing against the pink and lavender coat!

I love Loro Piana. The quality of the cashmere, the classic styles. I think it’s worth the investment.

So timely! I just upgraded and bought the max mara manuela coat. The most I’ve ever spent on a coat! ? But it’s bringing me joy and I’m justifying some retail therapy right now. Every year, I buy a new statement coat…besides fine jewelry, it’s my favorite category.
