What I Won’t Be Buying (For A While)

Sale PSA: A very 90’s lace edged crop top from Topshop, now under $14, a gorgeous (!!) pareo from Johanna Ortiz, now $125, a very pretty two piece from Reformation, now 40% off, and a crop pima cotton tee from Vince, now 60% off.

Also – a Nordstrom anniversary post is upcoming. I was back and forth on doing one this year because of *waves at chaos outside* but I’ve had enough requests and plus once I started browsing, there were some nice finds! That’ll go up next week, apologies for the delay.

My friends, since I am at home all the time I’ve been feeling like my content is all the same. Please expect ongoing posts of things that have/are currently helping me through Covid. Because we all need help getting through this! However today, for a change, I thought I’d post some categories of items I can’t see myself buying for a LONG time. And I’d love to hear what YOU are buying less off, too!

Okay let’s start:

Cocktail/formal dresses: Not because I can’t imagine going out after (I would LIKE to) but if anything this long break has reinforced that I have enough in my closet as is! I have so many and if the few weddings we were supposed to this year actually do get rescheduled I have enough for wear a different dress to each of them, and MANY MORE. I hope we get invited to more weddings. I’ve aged into the generation where watching young love from a comfortable seat is one of my favorite things to do.

Heels: See above. And my feet by now are so used to slippers and Birkenstocks that I fear they might find heels like torture devices. The problem is that there are actually some really nice, reasonable chunky/lower heels right now, like these OUTRAGEOUSLY priced Viviers. Normally I’d actually blow right past these and wait for a sale. But now I almost want to buy these now, and put them on a shelf in my office? As a shrine to the before times?

“Work” totes: I don’t know why. I think I’ve become a convert to the “basic simple backpack + mini crossbody” way of life. I’m also getting older and lugging around a heavy bag is very unappealing to me. Plus while I love the “high powered banker lady” look I don’t think a bank is hiring me anytime soon.

Fancy coats: I love coats but I a) have a lot and b) the idea of wearing a beautiful winter coat this fall is kind of depressing for some reason. AUGH! I have the feeling all I’m going to want to be wearing are cozy sweaters and big scarves and maybe warm parkas. I don’t know, is this just the Covid blues? I could totally stare at a beautiful bag or piece of jewelry I’m not going to wear but to do so for a coat is not appealing. I think maybe because it’s supposed to more utilitarian?

What do you see yourself not buying for a while?

I can’t imagine when I’d need to buy “work clothes” again. Even after this is all over and we can safely go back to the office, I’ve realized I’m so much more productive at home that I think I’d only like to work in the office two days a week. That means I’ll need 8 work outfits/month…and I have more than enough in my closet now to cover that for quite a long time. I stared longingly at all the lovely work dresses in the Nordstrom sale before moving on to the loungewear and bras…haha!

Yesss, same the with the heels and work totes. Previously, I was always on the hunt for the perfect heel or perfect work tote and now bleh. There were some serious manolo and choos on sale this season and I was like meh, when am I going to wear this? I bought a pair of Chanel espadrilles instead. Hahaha…there’s probably more of them in my future. I live in the northeast though so I’m still buying coats and jackets…it’s 90 degrees here right now but when fall hits…I will be all over that!

I used to be an avid buyer of work shoes – comfortable but stylish flats and mid heels to go with a nice work pant. I basically collected them. Since Covid I haven’t touched any of my work flats. I am on the birkenstock train and I won’t be hopping off until fall when wearing open toed shoes is frowned upon. I live in WA state so our 3 week run of nice summer weather will be coming to an end soon (even though it sadly just started) and I will be back in my slip on Vans and Converses – which seem weirdly not age appropriate as I type this (I’m early-ish 30’s) but YOLO – that is still cool to say right?

I think Vans & Converses are age appropriate no matter what your age, And I’d like to ad hiking boots to the list. If it’s “your look” then it “works”.

Erm, I couldn’t second the notion that Covid has changed everything for the better considering the massive ill effects on people who have been sick and essential workers (from retail to healthcare)….

Anyway, funnily enough, coats were on my list and then things changed and I had to get myself a new parka. And of course the moment I did that, we finally got the warm weather I had been yearning for for so long. Go figure. I’m buying more during this time for various reasons, mostly functional things, but also some nice little stationery things just because I’m valuing mail correspondence even more these days.

I do hope the side effects of what Covid has forced to happen with the move to remote work which is a major boon for the disabled demographic which has long needed this kind of accessibility for very valid reasons, do stick and that there won’t be a rush to just shift everything entirely back to normal.

Gosh I am right there with you. When I see nice dresses, heels, office bags – where do they fit in my life now? Nowadays, I try to spend as much time outside; where I am it’s super hot and humid so my clothes need to be comfy. Anything Lulu that has that special silver woven into the fabric (kills bacteria, keeps the fabric fresher) has been a godsend!

And forget lipstick and concealer / blush / face makeup. Totally pointless at this moment. Haircare, skincare, sunscreen – worth it.

Birkenstocks are my bread and butter these days – I have the EVA pairs and a more sturdy traditional pair. Can’t imagine wearing anything else. Even prettier sandals with buckles / flimsy soles – I just can’t be bothered. I’d make an exception just for the Hermes Legend sandals; they are awesome.

Expensive jackets. I bought two Chanel jackets in January-February and haven’t touched them! I have a closet full of them and like the poster above, I don’t think I’ll be traveling for work nearly as much or even going in to the office every day — so I really have enough to last me for a long time. On the other hand — when the Trim came back this summer I bought two (in different colors and sizes), and I’m eyeing the Gucci Jackie. I need to look at and use pretty things that are useful — I haven’t lost my enjoyment of fashion; it’s just shifted a bit away from work and toward home. Like everything else, I guess.
