Weekend Update

Sale PSA: A cool slightly cropped cotton sweater from Uniqlo, now just $10 (!!), a palm leaf print linen dress from Nicholas, now 60% off, linen pull on pants from Eileen Fisher, now 50% off, and a sleeveless caramel dress from Vince, now 40% off.

1. Today, sharing simple slide sandals from Madewell (on sale for 50% off).

What’s going on with Madewell? I know that J.Crew (its owner) is undergoing bankruptcy but I always thought Madewell sales were the shining star of the company, no? But there have been more sales this season than I’ve ever seen. They have 50% off all sandals right now and there are some great options – I love the little clogs above which remind me of the 90’s, and even something like these for inexpensive but pretty house slippers.

2. For any parents who have been wrangling with school Zoom (or non-parents who want a peek into our suffering) – check out this article, via The New Yorker: What Is Distance Learning For?

3. Tangentially, on the topic of Madewell sales above – I missed this thoughtful piece when it came out in May, via The NY Times – J.Crew Didn’t Need To Live Forever

4. You are all welcome in advance for this SUPER juicy piece, via The LA Times, about the “heartthrob prince” of Qatar and his time at USC. My God! And good for UCLA! I want to hear your thoughts on this one!

5. This week I’m reading Absalom, Absalom!, by William Faulkner.

I have only read Faulker on these occasions in my life: in high school (or was it college?) and once every probably five years when I want to feel really inspired by great writing (and kind of depressed that I’ll never be able to do this). I’d never read Absalom, Absalom but it was recommended by a friend as their favorite – and I’m both struggling through parts and just in awe at what a great novel it is, how crazy the plot is, how much stuff happens, how much Faulker is able to stuff in!! I love books where the South is a character, where you can totally feel it as the setting, and this is one too. If you’re looking for a classic, I recommend Absalom, Absalom.

Thaaaankssss! That was a doozy of a serving of juicy gossip. When I clicked, I was thinking it was just going to be a story of rich people spending bonkers money but wow…kinda serious (alleged) wrongdoings. Also, I enjoy having my dislike of USC reinforced.

I read a rumor that the heir to the throne of Dubai was also a bodybuilder and died because of steroid abuse. One of his brothers is now the heir to the throne. Strange how he couldn’t/didn’t do the same as what this Qatari prince did for his trainer. (Maybe it wasn’t steroid abuse then…? )

Sheikha Moza’s Wikipedia page has been updated to include the LA Times article!
