Weekend Update

Sale PSA: A v-neck t-shirt dress from Madewell, now $28, my favorite Baggu fanny pack, now $34, a soft and simple pima tank from Everlane, now $18, and a pretty leopard maxi dress from Ganni, now $240.

Also not exactly a sale but there is a great Clinique GWP (yes I judge on the bag print) right now. Oh! And Uniqlo has free shipping right now and some deals! I’ll likely get a bra top or two.

1. Today am sharing one of my favorite summer shirts, from Everlane.

I was thinking about this shirt the other day because I wasn’t that enthusiastic about it when I first got it (about a year ago) but I actually wear it a lot. Its just the perfect cropped length, has these nice notches to the side, is good quality, etc…I have the white and I’ll likely get the black next. Just one of those wardrobe workhorses.

PS: If you want a cheaper version (I haven’t tried it yet), check out this one from Uniqlo.

2. I really enjoyed this piece, via T&C, about J.Crew catalog nostalgia. I totally remember reading these catalogs. I wish I had still had some! As well as some of my old Vogue issues.

3. A great review, by the always excellent Vanessa Friedman, on Andre Leon Talley’s new tell-all/memoir. Are you going to read it? I’ve ordered my copy!

4. Thank you to the commenter last week, TM, who alerted me to this excellent article, about how Japanese men are starting to do more housework. The husband who talks about how he brushes teeth. My God! But at least he sounds like he’s willing to change!

5. This week I read If I Had Your Face, by Frances Cha.

In short: I really enjoyed this book. It was the kind I actually stayed up late each night to read. If I Had Your Face follows on a string of recent fiction favorites I’ve recommended, all set in South Korea (The Vegetarian, Kim Jiyoung). The book follows the paths of four women in South Korea, including a “room salon” girl, a mute hairstylist, an artist. I would say that this book is a true character study – there is a plot, with a satisfying ending, and I cared very much to find out what was going to happen to each of the girls – but you aren’t like, solving a murder or finding out who blew up the White House, if that makes sense. You’re going deep into these characters, their interior lives…and learning more about the society they live in. If you are at all interested in learning about modern day South Korea (and many East Asian cultures), if you love getting in deep with characters, and if you liked the writing of The Vegetarian – I highly recommend If I Had Your Face.

Thank you for the book recommendations! I Hope to read them all. I loved JCrew and their catalogs! I always looked forward to them. I really liked the Barneys jewelry catalogs too. I’m going to reread the JCrew article now.

I wish I had kept those old J Crew ones too – what a treat it was to get one in the mail or to visit the adorable store they had at the (NY) South Street Seaport. I really hope they can turn it around.

The old Vogues were SO good, especially from the late 90s-early 2000s. I don’t like the magazine very much anymore – can’t put my finger on why though.
