Weekend Update

Sale PSA: A fun pink Bonsai bag from Simon Miller, now under $200, adorable pom pom slippers from Ugg, now under $50, and a buffalo check cardigan from Madewell, now under $60.

1. Sharing this adorable canvas tote, from Mizele, on super discount!

It is 70% off!! And not even final sale! I’ve been in a resort mood lately and this is gorgeous – I am STILL searching for my perfect straw bag that folds and is easy to carry and doesn’t get damaged and it probably doesn’t exist but this is a nice option.

2. Posting this article, via The NYTimes, about Olivia Palermo’s new fashion line. I used to really love her style but I lost track of her awhile ago. You know when I really loved it? When she was on THE CITY.

3. A piece I think some of you (meeee) might relate to, via The NY Times: I Quit My Elaborate Skincare Routine. I have tons of little sample sizes but actually always return to the same products.

4. Now sharing this Vanity Fair piece about Peggy Siegel, the former “Oscar Whisperer”. My gosh! The things in this interview – and she’s a PR “expert”!

5. This week I’m reading Enrique’s Journey, by Sonia Nazario.

So the biggest controversy in publishing right now is definitely around the book American Dirt, which came out this week (for a primer read this piece in Slate, and the NYT review. The reviewer herself, Parul Sehgal, is so smart and well written by the way, and I recommend you follow her reviews if you like more “literary” fiction.

Anyway. I am on the library wait list for American Dirt because I am curious to to check it out but in the meantime I decided to use my dollars and buy Enrique’s Journey, which was based on a LA Times series which won two Pulitzers. And so far, it is incredible. I think fiction in many times can teach us the same or more than non-fiction but in this case I can’t imagine a better place to start learning about the journey and stories of migrants than in this exhaustively researched book. I highly recommend Enrique’s Journey.

That’s a great bag. Some spring cheer is much needed (Toronto is nothing but slush right now.) I decided to not buy American Dirt after the hype and controversy. Enrique’s Journey sounds like a much better read.

Wow! on Peggy Siegal. She compares her loss of work (that she clearly does not need to survive financially) with the Holocaust. She needs perspective, not more movie jobs.

I used to teach Enrique’s Journey (high school sophomores), and I appreciated Nazario’s candid description of Enrique and his family members. No one is perfect, nor should they have to be for readers to sympathize with their hardships, obstacles, and difficult decisions.
