Weekend Update

1. Lately I have been very into Madewell. The designs are great this season! The latest objection of my affection – this very cute mirror embroidered dress.

I love everything about this – the length, the little mirror details, the fact that it’s all sort of bra friendly, the button down, and the pockets. Yes! A great light linen/viscose blend that’s light and easy and a classic silhouette. The only irritating thing is that XXS is already sold out of all sites and lately I’ve found that the super cool items from Madewell all sell out at full price. This is like torture for me especially since I’ve now been trained to only shop on sale at J.Crew (sorry Mickey). But the designs are so great so it’s been worth it to get my size. PS: I also love this strawberry print ruffle dress.

2. Did you know that Amazon sponsored Khloe Kardashian’s baby shower? I didn’t! An interesting piece, via Racked, about how stars/influencers are making tons of money off of their babies (which I think might sound a little more nefarious than it is). I don’t know how I feel. I guess if this was me I might feel exploited later in life, unless my parents plowed all the money into Bay Area real estate or something. Then again I occasionally share photos of my children and they aren’t getting any $$ for it so they might be furious with me later on for that!

3. I love these little features from the FT about personal style but my favorite is when the person has some really great accessories, like in this one with Christina Zeller, the artistic director of Delvaux. Those Buccellati bracelets!

4. You read this article about Forbes naming Kylie Jenner the youngest ever “self-made” billionaire right? I read it and kind of wanted to die. I’m so curious. If this is what Kyle is doing at 20, what is she going to be doing at 30? 40? 50? Is she going to be President?

5. This week I read Look Alive Out There, by Sloane Crosley.

So this is actually the first book I’d ever read by Sloane Crosley – I’d never heard of her before, though apparently I should have, since she was on Gossip Girl, the guest appearances of which are the barometer in which I judge all celebrity (and she writes about it in this book). Crosley is famous for her essays, in a David Sedaris sort of way, with the same wit and candor and intelligence, though she’s a thirty something female in New York, so it’s also completely different. In short: I loved this book. I was pleasantly surprised because I knew almost nothing of it or the author when I picked it up and I found myself racing through and admiring her wit and language so much. After I finished, I checked out her other two books, How Did You Get This Number and I Was Told There’d Be Cake, both of which were great, but Look Alive is my favorite, maybe because I’m older now and we’re about the same age, thus I related to its topics the most. A wonderful surprise. Highly recommend Look Alive Out There.

It’s a Sunday evening and already feeling a bit stressed about the crazy upcoming week (one of a series of never-ending crazy weeks) — but I can’t resist peeking into your blog to see if there’s an update, and it definitely makes me relax a bit. It’s great to hear the voice of another working mom who’s trying to keep it all together, balancing practicality without forgetting in the stylistic and intellectual indulgences that make us more than worker bees. Thanks Katherine!
