Weekend Update

1. Have you noticed that there’s been a ton of great linen midi dresses lately? I have, because that is a clothing category I regularly shop for. Literally those words, in a bunch of sites: linen midi dress.

One of my current favorites, that I wanted to share with you all as it’s also work friendly, is this great Mango one.

In my opinion, this is one of those sorts of dresses that looks much more expensive/designer than it really is. The cut, the slits, the nipped in waist – super chic with the right accessories and I also think would look great on a variety of ages. A lot of the times, when dresses are linen and this long, they tend to look paper bag like – this one is elegant and sleek.

Also, Zara has a whole linen collection (goodie goodie) and I’ve also been eyeing this midi sundress from CAARA.

2. A series of interviews with Olivia Chantecaille and her personal taste, via the FT’s How To Spend It section – parts one and two. However, they did mislabel an Hermes Halzan handbag as Celine. Ahh!

3. My top recommended article this week is a piece via 1843 Magazine (The Economist) about how educated, “opinionated” (ugh that word) women in China are having trouble finding a husband – A Wife Less Ordinary. So fascinating and irritating to read. Also, I already knew what the term sajiao meant because my toddler has been doing it. A. Lot.

4. Did you know Sean Penn wrote a novel? The best book review on it, via The Huffington Post – Sean Penn The Novelist Must Be Stopped. Those sentences! OMG.

5. This week I finished the excellent graphic novel, Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant? by Roz Chast.

The book details Chast’s experience with dealing with her aging parents, and ultimately, their passing. While the topic is undoubtedly serious, its handled with a lot of humor (Chast is a cartoonist for the New Yorker) as well as honesty. A must read for anyone with aging parents, or who worries about the burden they might place on their own children as they age, or both. BUT you have to have a sense of humor and like (sometimes) brutal honesty. If not, then this might not be the book for you. I loved it however (and have already bought multiple copies for friends).  Highly recommend Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?

Those linen pieces are cute – do you find linen hard to take care of? I’m sort of averse ever since I completely shrunk a linen top, but it was almost certainly due to my not following the tag directions.

Thank you so much for posting that article from 1843! It was a fascinating yet troubling read. From personal experience living in HK I can unfortunately concur with a number of the observations – hearing men derisively label women as “too opinionated”, for example. The “plain yogurt” comment is just …
