On The “Birkin” Lawsuit

Sale PSA: A linen slip skirt from J.Crew, now $90, a pretty silk dress from Maje, now 55% off, and great simple black mules from Everlane, now $109

Thank you all to the readers who messaged/DMed me this recent NYT article on the Hermes lawsuit, over a customer who spent $$$ for a Birkin bag. Of course, I do find it all highly interesting!

What do you all think of it? From my own experience buying the brand it’s always been a little bit of a game, but nothing like these days. $60K in other items just to have the privilege to buy! I actually haven’t bought anything locally in years for that reason, I “left” some time ago and now it just seems too intimidating to enter back in. And the prices are eye watering. I don’t know if it’s just a factor of getting older or my life stage (kids, etc) but even were I to have the opportunity I’d have a hard time forking over so much for a bag. Well, I don’t want to sound too sanctimonious, haha. I do like pretty things and never say never! I’m sure there will be some amazing design that comes out and then I’ll be trying to figure out how many towels and teacups I have to purchase.

I do get asked this and I don’t regret selling my Birkins. I did it a long time ago because I wasn’t wearing them and I still wouldn’t be wearing them now. They aren’t practical for my lifestyle. My only regret would be that I would have such a hard time replacing them now. But I really wouldn’t be buying one for anything but just to *have* one. I kind of feel like that’s what the people suing want the bag for too…just to *have* it. But I also feel for them…Hermes can make anyone go a little crazy.

Anyway, I know there’s lot of long time H lovers here…so would love to hear your thoughts. On the article, and everything! I hope you are all well!

i do love H, but it drives me crazy that in some places (like Paris) it’s impossible to even get the chance to buy any bag – let alone the Birkin. I agree with you completely that the Birkin is too unpractical, and to me, excessively flashy. Maybe if I lived in a huge city I would feel comfortable wearing it – but in my town that has a distinct college / university feel – it just looks out of place. I prefer Hermes bags that aren’t quite as well known, though I do love my Evelyne :).

I’m so glad you posted, thank you!! I miss your great writing and fashion advice!! Maybe you can do a “10 things lately” post soon? Something along those lines.

I just read about it today and wondered if they really had any real case to argue, legally. They’re restricting access to their products, not restricting the field of designer handbags, so (without any legal knowledge at all) I’m quite curious how this qualifies as antitrust. I see it as they’re overcharging and monopolizing the market for this specific product but that’s protected by their brand, and that’s not the same thing as monopolizing the market for all luxury handbags.

H bags are still the best quality bags I have owned, but buying from H boutique shops are just exhausting. Some shops don’t even have the non-quota bag items I want to buy even when I was willing to spend that kind of money. A b30 is still quite functional for work but I do admit it is a bit flashy…
