Weekend Update

Sale PSA: A cropped sweatshirt from Madewell, now under $20, simple slide sandals from Steve Madden, now under $50, and silver sandals from J.Crew that I shared a few weeks ago, now under $60.

1. This week, sharing these cute Birkenstocks (yes Birks again)!

I like these a lot – they are sleek and wearable and a little less ubiquitous than their usual styles (which I wear all the time). My only annoyance is of course the price – I like the all one color styling which you can get for way less in the rubber/EVA versions, but I like to have more support for real walking shoes. Wishlisted!

2. Sharing this piece, via the WSJ, about the success of High Sport pants. I have never tried these pants but do like the look of them. But I am short and just don’t think they will look the same on me as leggy fashion editors.

3. Thanks to all who DMed, commented, and emailed to make sure I was aware of this piece, via the NYT, about super fake bags. I was! I was just saving it for this week šŸ˜‰

4. Posting this article, via Harpers UK, about the popularity of vintage Prada.

5. This week, I read In The Woods, by Tana French.

This is one of those books which I’ve had for years and had tried before and couldn’t get into – I’m not sure why. I gave it another chance this week and found I loved it – so good and more literary than I thought. One of those books you think about after finishing. If you’re looking for a literary thriller, I highly recommend In The Woods.

Why on earth are those Birkenstocks so expensive? And while Iā€™m at itā€¦$860 for knit pants? Ridiculous.

I have a pair of HS pants (2 years now – originally heard about from Gloria newsletter, which is a good one!) and have to say I’m a fan. The price is ridiculous but the idea that they keep their shape, are comfortable, look sharp, and have a classic silhouette makes it a bit more bearable. I think I’ll have them for a long time. And I’d buy another pair.

I do understandā€¦but I canā€™t afford to spend that on pantsā€¦no matter how well they are made! I have spent that on bagsā€¦but they are sturdier than pants!

I am so curious about those HS pants and would love to know if youā€™ve tried the Margot pants from Anthropologie. Seems to be the same idea but in fairness, Iā€™ve never seen or tried the HS pants in person

Can I ask how tall you are? I have the same concern re height (5ā€™ here) but the marketing is getting to me on these pants!

I just don’t get it with the High Sport pants. 32% lycra? These are yoga pants trying to be something more respectable for the women who’ve become accustomed to wearing yoga pants as regular clothing. I’m not into athleisure or sport clothing/shoes so wouldn’t wear them if they were free.

I actually have several pairs of Eileen Fisher stretch crepe pants in blackā€¦the fabric is 70% Viscose/24% Nylon/6% Spandex. At least one pair is more than 5 years old, and Iā€™ve purchased a few more since. They are also pull-on pants, tapered and ankle length. They are my go-to ā€œniceā€ pants that can be dressed up or down. They are still $165.

Echoing others on how/when/why did these all leather footbed Birks get so expensive! I have a pair of all leather, all black Arizona’s that I ordered from Barney’s (RIP) online when they were an ‘exclusive’ a couple years ago, and I remember they were a premium for the all leather footbed, but dude…no way they were anywhere near this price! Sigh, I feel like I’m getting old…also nostalgic for when luxury handbags (and jewelry!) were $1K in the early ’00s and that felt like a wildly expensive, hard to justify indulgence back then! I’m hunting down those bags on the resale market now because the quality was amazing and it’s never been the same since, LOL. But yeah, the Birkenstocks are cute! They will have to go on sale….right? šŸ™‚

I feel the same way. Remembering $295, $350 Manolos, $4,000 VCA 10-motif necklaces and $3,500 Kelly bags. The prices today are simply crazy.

Iā€™m afraid that since Bernard Arnault (the man behind LVMH) invested in Birkenstock in 2021, we are going to see the brand shifts more towards luxury and higher prices šŸ™

I love Tana French and have read all of her books. My favourite is The Likeness. Would highly recommend.
