Weekend Update

Sale PSA: A fun boucle sweater from Helmut Lang, now $158 (I’m very tempted by the green!!), cute floral sweater from Rails, now 30% off, and a wrap sweater skirt from J.Crew, now 35% off (this looks so nice and cozy).

1. This week, sharing this Bottega cassette bag.

Ugh! I keep vowing to stop sharing these Bottega cassette bags because each season goes by and I still don’t purchase and then I’m like well…I didn’t buy one then so why get one now? But then there’s something like this! I really want a nice silver bag but just worry about the wear factor.

2. I think this piece, via Harpers Bazaar, on Polene is interesting. I’ve always admired their designs on other bloggers like Elaine but never tried one. Would love to hear your thoughts!

3. I liked this feature, via Vanity Fair, on the always elegant Deeda Blair. I think I’ll probably buy her book, she’s one of those women I think I’d like a coffee table book from.

4. I liked this piece, via the NYT, on Sarah Staudinger of Staud. I normally don’t like these sorts of puff pieces but this was interesting!

5. This week, I read Lucy by the Sea, by Elizabeth Strout.

At this point, I think I’ve committed to reading everything Strout has written. I’m a fan! And she publishes quite a lot, which is even better. I would say this worker is more “autofictiony” than her prior stuff – though I do feel Strout has been going in that direction. And I have to warn you: it’s set in the middle of Covid, with all the real events…sometimes it just felt a little too soon for me, if that makes sense. But of course I finished it, like I always finish her work. If you’ve liked any of Strout’s other fiction, I’d recommend Lucy by the Sea.

I’m reading that book right now, and like you, have read everything she’s written.
Enjoyed the article on Staud and even thought I think I’m pretty up to date on nutrition, had to lookup lectins. Am curious why she and Ari avoid them.

I think the overall tone is so different. More casual, faster pace, less character development. Much more dialog. I read it really fast and easily. I guess we all know the characters by now and so don’t need further backstory than she gives. It’s the only book I’ve read recently that actually addresses Covid and like you said, it almost felt a bit too soon. She’s so talented a writer though, that I fall completely into the story. The one daughter was struggling with something that I’ve personally dealt with (pregnancy) and so it hit me emotionally. As always, really enjoyed it! Hope to read something new by you maybe?!

Thanks Kat for the mention! Also if you’ve been eyeing the Bottega just get it :). I feel like it might have passed peak trendiness but it’s still a good looking bag. Or maybe better yet get it secondhand at Fashionphile–they allow returns.
