Weekend Update

1. This week, I like this J.Crew cotton gauze skirt.

It is pretty! Right? And very nice for summer. The only thing I don’t like is the price, which I find pretty high for simple cotton gauze – it’s like they know we are all waiting for sales now, which is true, so. I am thinking about the white but would like to know if it is too sheer. But I have been looking for this sort of skirt for ages.

2. A pretty upsetting, and nuanced piece from The New Yorker, about how the Ivy League turned against a student.

3. I liked this piece, via the NYT, on Joan Collins. I think I like profiles on anyone over eighty.

4. An interesting piece, via Fashionista, about Banana Republic’s revamp. I’d love to buy from BR again! I haven’t been in years. I just looked around the site – there are some intriguing items here!

5. This week I read Luster, by Raven Leilani.

I really enjoyed this. In full disclosure: I tried to read Luster I think a year ago, and for some reason just couldn’t get into it (I try a lot of books! I only recommend the ones I read all the way and like!). Anyway, I gave it another chance and this time I was like…wow. Leilani is such a clever, smart writer and I loved all of this. It’s definitely a literary read – about a young woman who moves in with a couple – and not necessarily always “feel good.” BUT. I If you’re looking for an intriguing piece of literary fiction, I recommend Luster.
