Weekend Update

Sale PSA: A great linen double breasted blazer from Max Mara, now under $300, pretty patent booties from Aquatalia, now 25% off, and this simple and very chic canvas tote from Everlane, now $29.

1. This week, sharing something purely cozy, this corduroy shirt jacket I’ve been waiting to come back into stock at Madewell.

Of course it comes after the site ended its 20% off everything sale. But I love corduroy! As soon as the weather starts turning I start thinking about how much cozier I would be in corduroy. This is on my list, and I think I’d get it in a slightly larger size for ease.

2. Thank you to Tracy for mentioning this kerfuffle, between the owners of Porthault and Mindy Weiss – I immediately went to go research and am now sharing with all of you.

3. And thank you to Kamya for recommending this piece, via the NYT, about Tibi’s reinvention in 2020. I loved it! And bought some Tibi to try myself. Lately I feel OK to buy full price for certain brands – it’s a vote of support with my wallet.

4. A frustrating piece, via The Cut, on five school nurses on what is really going on at schools during Covid. WHEN will this end.

5. This week I read Razorblade Tears, by S.A. Cosby.

I really enjoyed this story, about two men who go on a quest of vengeance, looking for their son’s killers. It tackles a lot of big topics with excellent prose and I never lost interest. If you’re looking for a gripping, literary thriller, I highly recommend Razorblade Tears.

I’m so glad you liked the article! I have so many thoughts on Tibi. At first, it was a brand that I only bought on sale and only the most basic pieces. (In my pre-COVID life, I worked at a white shoe law firm and dressed very conservatively.) However, I was pretty surprised to learn during the last few years that 1) brands have to pay department stores when department stores put their pieces on sale and 2) department stores can just refuse to pay for merchandise they ordered and that the brand has already paid for. As I started watching Amy’s lives and following her stories, I came to appreciate the people that make up her very small company and the hard work and care they put into their clothes. Tibi also severed a lot of the department store relationships so the brand is harder to find, and the production sizes are a lot smaller. Many of the pieces I wanted sold out quickly, and it retrained me a bit to stop always looking for the cheapest price. And a lot of the details I previously thought were “weird” actually look interesting now, and make my clothes not so basic. I now try to budget for 1-2 pieces Tibi pieces to buy at full price a season that I really, really love, instead of throwing money here and there on something ordinary but is on super sale. I also have a wish list for sale season, and if the item is still around by then, buy it directly from the brand. As you say, it is a vote of support from my wallet. If I ever end up back in an office, I will be dressing much better than before!
