Sale PSA: Skinny sweatpants from Free People, now 40% off, a simple sweatshirt from Reformation, now 40% off, a cable cardigan from Reformation, now $103, and fun suede mules from Manolo Blahnik, now 40% off.

Also sharing my latest Etsy find, these awesome resin tables!

1. This week, sharing a pretty eyelet skirt from J.Crew.

J.Crew, why so stingy with the codes lately? There are quite a few items in my shopping bag! Including this skirt. I love the elastic waist (of course) and the flowiness and general easy nature of this piece. And, it comes in black!

2. I know I’ve shared a few articles about this already (sorry! I’m obsessed!). But NY Mag has an interview with Amy Chua which I found fascinating (I could read another article about how she decided to be photographed like that with her dogs).

3. A piece, via the NYTimes, about the return of the extreme crop top. I feel like such an old fuddy duddy in that I could never imagine wearing a shirt like this. Body positivity does have something to do with it – how wonderful that a generation younger can feel free to wear whatever they like without worry…or at least less worry. I hope.

4. I know this is an ad but I LOVED this video of the behind the scenes of a Tiffany shoot. It has the wonderful Grace Coddington and it is fascinating to hear her through process as they move through planning an ad campaign. There is so much that goes into visual creative work like this and I love learning about it all. Everyone is a true artist!

5. This week, I read Mrs. Bridge, by Evan Connell.

This is one of those “classic” books which I’d tried years back and couldn’t get into. I recently picked it up again however and my interest just grew and grew and soon I was really moving through the pages. This is one of those “literary” novels (which means great writing/language) where nothing really happens, as in no murderers or zombies, but of course a lot does happen, as we move through life with Mrs. Bridge. I really enjoyed this one. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a next literary read.

Thank you so much for sharing the video – it was wonderful. I love everything about Grace Coddington (except perhaps her wild hair but she wouldn’t be Grace without it!).

    Hi Kat,
Last week, I almost DMed you on Insta to ask your opinion about the Amy Chua article. I am South Asian and wanted to know what you thought of her. I have also listened to some of the interviews she gave after the student backlash about her methods and support of Kavanaugh. She triggers a lot of mixed feelings for me. In any case, I decided against messaging you because I did not want to intrude / impose. So, imagine my pleasant surprise that you included this article in the weekend update. Yes! I could also read another article about why she decided to pose like that with the dogs.

Those dogs are Samoyeds. They are beautiful and do attract a lot of attention in person. They are super friendly and not really good guard dogs. Hence, they are also known as smiling dogs, and they need to be walked a lot. They are pretty strong when they lurch after something, so they must make her work out those arms.

I think she poses like that because she really loves those pups, and takes them out for walks a lot. She poses with two Samoyeds in most of her articles with her family..and Twitter. She’s a Samoyed lover for life.

As for the pose, it’s a power pose with the red power color with her power side smirk. ? She is Tiger mom after all, and her daughter did advise her to take the heat, defend herself and not crawl away from the recent attacks.

Thank you for explaining the “power” attributes in the picture. If her intent was to appear tone deaf, mission accomplished. No wonder she doesn’t understand the backlash and thinks it is some kind of retribution.

I kind of agree…she is posing to show she isn’t apologetic

You can message me anytime 🙂 Esp. if you have articles you want to share! And I feel the same way, a lot of mixed feelings. I haven’t really sat down and “unpacked” how I feel about her totally yet.

I couldn’t finish the Amy Chua article. Her husband seems to have some kind of obsession with the definition of rape. Also, I don’t believe academics should have any power in influencing students’ careers aside from teaching. This concept of powerful professors is foreign to me because in Asia, local academics don’t seem to have much influence and there is also a significant proportion of students who attend university overseas and return home to begin their careers.

I read the same Amy Chua article – fascinating read, with mixed feelings. I’m kind of surprised that her daughters told her to defend herself, given how much they’ve already been in the spotlight post-Tiger Mom.

Re: crop tops, I finally caved and bought my first one. Not an extreme crop like in the article, so I find it actually fits well since I have a short torso and it’s not too revealing. Recently I’ve seen many younger ladies (god I feel so old saying that! Even though I’m a millennial) wearing bra tops outside. I def wouldn’t be comfortable in those, but kudos to them for feeling confident in their bodies!

I also read Mrs. Bridge, starting with Mr. Bridge. I needed the right setting to get into these subtle books and a six month membership at a Scandinavian spa was the ticket. No internet or gadgets, so I read old school via paperback. I was immersed in the Bridges world and thoroughly enjoyed them both.
Right now I’m reading your latest book and am really, really into it! It’s a great escape novel with a prescient subject. Outstanding writing!

Thank you so much for reading my book! And you described the setting needed to read Mrs. Bridge SPOT ON – the spa sounds like heaven. So glad you enjoyed!
