Now that my book is out and I have some more time, I’ve been doing some shopping. Like really browsing and having some fun and adding to cart… and not beating myself up when I realize an hour has gone by. And yes, I haven’t lived in a total vacuum, and know from Olivia Rodridgo’s videos that the nineties were back…but it hadn’t hit me to what extent! It really truly seems to be everywhere! From Old Navy to Net-A-Porter. Even a usually reliable favorite, Everlane, has a bunch of what I’d consider really trendy 90s stuff, like these mini dresses. Not wanting to go down a trend rabbit hole and emerge on the other end of the season which a bunch of unwearable, gut enhancing items, I decided to think about what nineties stuff I do really like, that I’d probably wear at least a few years from now:

Cropped options. I am short so cropped is great. I feel like I have been looking for cropped options forever…and this season it’s like a crop explosion. Like this J.Crew sweater above is my perfect length – just a tiny bit below the waist, but not enough that it looks like a teen item. That being said there are so many super cropped items. Like…barely past the bra length. WHY? Surely there are many like me who would like a reasonable middle ground? Items that can be worn with high waist pants but don’t show everything if you even raise your arms a little.

Button down dresses. I’ve always liked this style – I love the ease of the buttons and how it’s easy to adjust the slit to make the dress as comfortable as you like. And, since the style been popular the last few years I feel like it’s been great for selection. To the point where there’s almost too much…and yet still I keep buying them. I guess I fear that one day trends will change. This Madewell version is lovely and versatile – actually, Madewell has quite a few nice dresses this season that toe that line between weekend/work very well. Also, here is a very cute shorter version!

Slip dresses. I’ve always loved this style and think a bias cut is so gorgeous. I don’t exactly live a “slip dress” life so I haven’t purchased one yet. But I do think this one is lovely, from Aritzia (and it is bra friendly!). And yeah it looks a little lingerie but you know..after the past year I think everyone should just wear what they like. However, the style does not appear to be Covid weight friendly. So.

How do you feel about the nineties trend this season? What are some standouts for you all?
