Black Friday Purchases

Sale PSA: The J.Crew cardigan I linked last week is back on sale, though for a paltry 20% off, the ever popular Sophie sweater blazer, on sale for a much friendlier 60% off, a simple cotton blend turtleneck from Chelsea28, now $37, Jennifer Fisher gold hoop earrings, now 30% off, and a cozy fleece pullover from The North Face, now under $99

Hello! How were your holidays? I hope they were wonderful. I didn’t do much, ate our Whole Foods meal and then baked a little (I’m really not a baker but Covid has forced me to be resourceful) and went on walks with the kids. And now we’re back to Monday.

I shopped more this weekend than I have in prior years. Almost all lounge/comfortable items. Here’s what I bought:

Madewell Tartan Plaid Flannel shirt. Because this is the best plaid I’ve seen for a while! I have recently gotten into very THICK flannel shirts and while Madewell’s isn’t the thickest, it’s a good enough weight and I like their cuts the most. 30% off and please note that even though it is oversized, I stuck with XS as I like the bigger look and plus I’ve found their shirts can shrink in the wash.

Patagonia Down Hoody Jacket. This is an extremely Bay Area basic jacket I know but I need a decent quality one. I have one of the Uniqlos but it is thin and the outer layer ripped last time I was hiking with the kids (all we do is hike now given Covid). I still have other Uniqlos, and think they are a great value, but needed something more durable (with a lifetime guarantee!). I spent forever trying to figure out my size, since I like some space but don’t want it too baggy. I finally got XS and will report how I like it. Apparently this is a decent price for Patagonia – 30% off – on a classic item; if anybody knows better please share! I’m not well versed in outdoor gear.

Cire Trudon Rose Poivree candle. I like to add a new “fancy” candle every holiday. I use them after to hold knick knacks after they’ve all melted so like to keep to a black and white theme…I also love rose scents so this was a no brainer. The best price is at Matches (which I linked). At Saks it is $115 and Net-A-Porter, it is $105! Weird but I can’t wait to receive!

Everlane waffle henley: This isn’t on sale (actually I just got it on Sunday, when it appeared on the site, which I’ve been stalking trying to find my merino half zip). BUT I love my waffle henley shirts from last year and have been wondering if they’d reappear. They are the perfect “cropped but not too cropped” length and hit right between the waist and hip. They are comfortable and I love the henley feature – these have three buttons, versus last year’s, which are two. I take an XS.

Uniqlo pile lined fleece pants: Yes…really not sharing too many fashionable things but such are our times. These pants are my favorite for super cold days…they are so cozy and I love the fleece lining. I take an XS and they fit a little smaller than other pants because of the lining (but the waist is the same). My older ones have bleach stains from various laundry mishaps so I decided to get a new pair.

Okay…there you are, my none-too-glamorous but accurate post Thanksgiving shopping purchases. What did you pick up? Anything?

The Patagonia down jackets are FANTASTIC. One thing that’s becoming increasingly important for me is to buy from companies that are run ethically but also quality. Patagonia is both.

I buy my kids the “Baby Down Sweater” (which is basically this jacket and not a sweater at all!” and they take a beating. Somehow all the scraping of elbows and against rocks have not ripped/torn these jackets at all and my kids are rough on them. They also resell VERY well.

I love thick flannel too but can’t find them. Where have you seen them?

Kat – Your Thanksgiving sounds similar to mine. The kids had a great time though, and we also decorated our home and put up our (fake) tree. I received my +J down jacket and I love it. All the reviewers said it ran huge but I was happy with my normal size, cinched slightly. I also picked up a Rebecca Taylor blouse that can work both for more important work calls or holiday Zoom events.

With all the deals going on, spent way too much the past week on house organizing stuff (IKEA and open spaces), PJs for the kids from Hanna Anderson, cozy leggings and jeans from Gap kids, lounge pants from Old Navy and Gap, velvet leggings from Crew Cuts and ? lounge pants from J Crew, dainty earrings from Stone and Strand, Japanese undies from Amazon Japan, Japanese snacks from Sugoi Mart to make up for not being able to travel to Japan on summer, Steelcase office chair from Amazon, cosmetics from MAC, serum from Holysnails, sweatpants from Mini Boden, Christmas gifts from Disney store, Harry Potter scarves from Universal Orlando online (kids Christmas wish list), more Christmas gifts from etsy, ordered a ton of books from Linden Tree, white porcelain plates and more storage boxes from Muji, more storage and home furnishing from Target and I need to stop ? Like you, I have never shopped so much at this time compared to previous years.

Hi Kat! New reader here, also based in the Bay Area (and tech), with a penchant for a lot of similar brands – Everlane, Elizabeth Suzann, Loewe, Patagonia…

Not sure if you saw her latest email, but Liz P. launched Elizabeth Suzann Studio this week with a few Alabama Chanin pieces and remnant fabrics. Ended up buying some of the lightweight wool fabric to hopefully sew my own Florence Pants 🙂
