On Agendas

Sale PSA: The excellent Uniqlo compact down jacket is now $10 off for a limited time (the coat too – if you want either I’d grab now), the cashmere sweater tee (which I have and love) from Everlane, now $75, waterproof boots from Blondo, now under $90, and a fun tie dye backpack from Vans, now $21.

Also a few of you pinged about more Etsy recs so sharing what I bought this weekend – this little felted fox kit, to save for a future night when I need some stress relief. Can’t wait to try and make!

As we past the mid-point of October and November looms near, I have been distracting myself from the election with one particular shopping chore. One which I look forward to each year. Buying an agenda!

Even though I buy an agenda every year, for some reason 2019 was the year I started keeping one in earnest. Before that I mostly used my phone’s calendar, but after awhile I started to revert to paper…I don’t know, I guess it felt more “real” to me. And ironically enough, easier to organize and track – I can’t remember all the times that I just “snoozed” on an appointment, and was late/forgot something altogether. I also like leafing through and seeing all my past activities.

Now, like most of you 2020 is a year I’d mostly like to forget…I have quite a few EMPTY weeks in my current agenda. However, 2021 is coming up! Which means…new agenda! One I promise this time to only use my neatest handwriting in! And never put my the unwanted stickers of my children! Is there anything that holds more promise than a brand new, empty diary?

With that said…some of the ones I’m looking at, below:

Moleskine: I have this version now, in plain red. It’s great! It’s well priced! I really love all the various Moleskine special editions and especially these lucky cats. They are an arrow of adorability straight into my heart. BUT sometimes you want to try something new. A new format, slightly new layout, you know. So to that end, I’ve also been looking at…

Smythson. I had a hard time choosing between this and the beautiful gold version. These agendas are bigger than the Moleskine above…they’re definitely “sit on desk and look gorgeous” agendas. Or do we call them calendars? Anyway, I normally wouldn’t consider such a large planner BUT I’m really not sure how much I’ll be leaving the house, at least in the first half of 2021, you know? Portability isn’t so top of mind then. And so, if I’m going to spending so much time at my desk, why not have something nice to look at? A splurge? There’s also this pocket version which is probably better for me but just much less glamorous looking.

Leuchtturm1917 Weekly Planner: I love Leuchtturm. My favorite little notebooks are from them. And I really really love how many different colors these planners come in (all very millennial and trendy). That being said they do seem quite close to the Moleskine AND I kind of think the fact that they come with a little extra notebook is a waste. What am I going to use a tiny little notebook/address book for? But I think their paper quality is slightly better than Moleskine so this one is still on my list.

Rifle Paper Pocket Agenda: Last but not least! This one is really tempting me. The price is so good and it is adorable. I adore Rifle Paper and kind of regret not using them for our wedding invitations (I had thought about it and even gotten a quote – that was back when Anna Bond was still doing custom illustrations for each one!). This one looks so sweet and compact and has everything you need and nothing more. It is by far the least expensive, too. It might be the one I get..I just wish I could see it in person so I could see the quality and paper thickness. Anyone ever tried a Rifle Paper calendar?

Are you an agenda/planner addict? Which are your favorite? Taking suggestions!

LOVE Muji, hate their website just like you. So sad they are closing their US stores.

Hi Kat! Will you get a nice pen for your new agenda or do you already have one? I have a blue Tiffany pen that I love! I love nice pens even though I seldom write. I’ve loved them ever since I read American Psycho. The book is actually really good. I just skipped the graphic murders.

I used agendas when I still worked. Now retired, I just use my phone.

I am thinking about ordering that felted fox kit…

I’ve been using blank Leuchtturm medium (A5) sized dot grid notebooks as a planner for a few years now. I write in my own “weekly” planner layout, which takes maybe 10-15 minutes once a month or so (to write in my layouts for the next 4-5 weeks). I like being able to customize with the exact layout I prefer and that I can start my planner anytime in the year (one book lasts about a year and a half, I also devote maybe 10 pages in front and 30-50 pages in back for other notes or to journaling without writing in the one-week layouts on those pages). The Leuchtturm paper holds up pretty well to fountain pens too, which I started using a few months ago. I’ve still been using my planner a lot, even if I’m stuck at home.

I do really like the Smythson ultra-thin (and still mostly fountain pen-friendly) paper! From using a Smythson notebook, though not one of the agendas, the Smythson books feel really luxurious and nice to use, though the pale blue color of the paper doesn’t show off all colors of fountain pen ink to their best advantage.

My planner acts as my bible. I live by it. It’s a monthly layout, so I can scan upcoming weeks as well as the current week. It’s a Leather Gallery planner that I usually purchase at a book store, but it’s available online also. I’ve used this style/brand for years.
An appointment doesn’t actually exist until it is entered. If I’m monitoring my blood pressure, those numbers are entered. If something is written down, I do it. If it’s not entered, I won’t remember what I was supposed to do or when. It runs my life….

    Yeah, election fatigue here too.

My favorite (until I migrated to my phone) is the Hermes vision agenda. I love the compact size and of course the colorful leather covers!

Have you also tried some of the online Asian stationery stores for agendas? I’m a total pen/notebook geek and was so happy to find these very well stocked websites: Yoseka Stationery and Jetpens

The moleskin planner is adorable and I almost bought it this morning based on your recommendation! But, I think the layout is not ideal for me and so I may try Golden Coil. It was recommended by a blogger I follow on instagram.

I am very eager to move onto 2021 to say the least… :/

I swear by Filofax, which I’ve used for years. Mine is black ostrich and holds a week-on-two-pages diary — replaced yearly — address book, and miscellaneous items such as compact maps. At roughly 4″ x 6″ and 3/4″ deep (unless it’s stuffed), it’s too bulky to carry daily so it sits on my desk not taking up too much room and I do bring it when traveling.

I like the 2-page format b/c I can see everything at a glance and each day’s entry is large enough to make notes.

I love Filofax too 🙂 It was my aspirational planner when I was a kid because everyone famous I had read about used one!

    Hello Kathy,

Paper! Agendas! (Don’t get me started on pens…)

For years, a Filofax was my agenda. It lasted decades, to the point where it was overflowing and still held together. Alas it felt too heavy to lug around and it seemed heavier once smart phones came out with instant access to an address book that was easier to “update”. Yet I never lost the need for a physical agenda. My choice is a small Leuchtturm. The paper is better than the Moleskine, even my fountain pens prefer the Leuchtturm paper. (Although the Rhodia paper is even better for a plain pad of paper. Yes I use Rhodia paper for my grocery lists!) I use the Leuchtturm mini A7 size as I can carry it in my smallest bag and have easy access. The pocket size is better for space but the mini fits. It works at a glance. I don’t include goat detail in it but it still has enough space for me. Plus the spare pages at the back, the small gusseted pocket, the ribbon bookmark…) I order mine in August when the upcoming new year edition is available. I get mine embossed too.

For a “purse size” pen, I use a Fischer Space Pen “bullet”. (Handy whenever you’ve had to fill out a customs form standing up, as gravity does not effect the ink – it’s solid ink.) If I lose this pen, I wouldn’t be too upset. For home use, I use fountain pens and a really nice ball point…

“Goat” detail? Sorry that was supposed to be “great ” detail…

I don’t include great detail in it.

I have a larger Rifle paper planner and I LOVE it! I also have a notebook I carry around for notes (I’m a realtor and I write notes all the time and reference them back months later, so I love to have a good notebook). The paper quality is wonderful on both, so I would imagine that the pocket planner is great, too!

I’ve been using Hobonichi for a few years now. The paper is great for fountain pen inks (another black hole easy to fall into…), very thin and doesn’t bleed or ghost. I also like Leuchtturm and Rhodia but more as notebooks than agendas.

I second Hobinichi and also love Midori Traveler’s Notebook. I’ve been alternating between the two for years.
