Weekend Update

Sale PSA: A plush pullover from Theory, now $150, classic Ray-Ban Clubmasters, now 30% off, high waist 7/8 leggings from Zella, now 50% off (excellent price!), a great Everlane mockneck “ReCashmere” sweater, now under $60, and white cropped flare pants from Vince, now 60% off.

PS: Not on sale but if any of you are looking to have some stress relief, I ordered one of these and am very much looking forward to completing it!

1. This week, sharing my most recent order: this outside composting bin!

After my last post (thank you all for your wonderful and thoughtful comments!) I had a lot of messages requesting recs for composting bin recommendations (right now we just use our city’s yard waste/compost bin for collection) and so I decided to go ahead and order and report back. This will enable us to collect our own food scraps and eventually turn it into fertilizer! This one says it’ll require about an hour to assemble (good luck, husband) and I am super excited. When I was ordering this, I thought about how much happiness I am going to get and the sheer GIRTH and usefulness of this thing, all for $90. When was the last time an item of clothing brought me so much joy? Especially at this price?

2. Two articles, via the Guardian, from a man diagnosed with terminal cancer. The first is here, written in April, and the second is here, from earlier in September. These are must reads.

3. For those of you looking for some YouTube goodies – I loved this little series I just found, via Marie Claire, Precious Metals. The two Housewives, Erika and Sutton, were my favorites.

4. An oldie but goodie, via Vanity Fair (true crime fans you will love this one) – long and juicy, about a 23 year old cold case and how it finally got solved.

5. This week, I read Secondhand Time, by Svetlana Alexievich.

This book is kind of a record of the Russian experience after the fall of Communism. I love these sorts of books so was happy to discover this – obviously not really a “discovery” as Alexievich won the Nobel Prize!

It took me about a week to finish this. It’s kind of a Russian version of Studs Turkel, with shorter snippets and less identification of the voices. If you’re interested in modern Russia and the fall of Communism, if you love non-fiction (and don’t mind a more fragmented structure) – I highly recommend Secondhand Time.

I’ve been dying to compost! Please keep us posted on how that goes. Such as does it attract bugs and animals, etc… Thanks!

I have a similar compost bin from Costco. I originally kept it outside my kitchen on the deck but it drips liquid… So we painstakingly moved it to our backyard and it’s been there happily doing its job. We also have two other big compost bins for leaves and yard waste.

    Hi Kathy,
I’ve been following along since you lived in Boston and while I don’t really keep up with any blogs anymore, I still look forward to your weekend updates. The essays from the man diagnosed with terminal cancer really tugged at my heartstrings. I was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of years ago and can relate to so much of what he says. Lucky for me, breast cancer is often a treatable disease (even though for me the treatment was worse than I could have imagined). Coming out on the other end, I’m so grateful for all that I have and have a whole new perspective on life.

Keep all the great reading recommendations coming!
