Daily Pleasures

Sale PSA: One of my favorite cashmere sweaters from Everlane, now under $100, a simple mule from Madewell, now 60% off, a gorgeous silk Ulla Johnson dress, now 40% off, and for anyone looking for a great, super stylish tote, this Celine Zebra Twisted Cabas is under $800 – this is one of my favorite Phoebe Philo/Celine era designs ever.

How are all of you doing? I’ve been doing a little better, lately. In terms of the “new normal”. Adjusting to it, making small changes. Some days it is a lot or I feel tired or simply super sick of eating my own cooking (and various Trader Joe’s frozen foods); I can feel a little out of my head and so as a balancing mechanism I’ve decided to try and insert some deliberate happiness into each day. I know it sounds a little sappy and/or obvious but making a concerted effort to have some daily pleasures has helped me so much – here are some of the things I’ve started to do, during this uncertain period:

Including more “little luxuries” in my bath/skincare routine routine. I decided to do this after too many hurried face washes/brush teeth/floss/lets get into bed as quickly as I can. I used to enjoy skincare! Doing serums, smelling yummy fragrances, choosing masks. Lately I’ve been lazy to do masks (who is going to see me)?? but for some reason I’ve gotten into little face massage tools. Maybe because I can do it at my desk or in the playroom with kids and it is a quick perk me up. My favorite is actually this face roller. Yes I bought this because of its price and also because I had the full sized Nuface in my cart and just couldn’t justify it. But it feels very good! Especially if you keep it in the fridge!

Staring at the sky. I have to be honest, writing that sentence makes me feel like I’m really reaching to try to get content. Like when you click on one of those articles about ten tips to being happy and all of the items are some variation of: “Be Happy”. But it honestly staring at the sky make me so happy! What I usually do is drag the kids outside and then I lay a blanket on the ground and then just zone out at the blue for as long as they will allow me. I have an old LL Bean blanket which I could no longer find online but I just bought this one and it’s larger and much less money. Throw a chilled LaCroix in the mix (we’ve been having great weather) and I’m in heaven.

Ordering sweets. Places I’ve ordered from since this all began: Christopher Elbow, Milk Bar, Sprinkles (for local pickup), and Sees (also pickup). I kind of feel like the girl who sends herself flowers in high school to make her crush jealous but it is nice to receive goodies every week! And yes, I do order every week because invariably my husband and kids take their share too. PS – Milk Bar often has free/reduced shipping promotions, I tend to wait until I see one and then pounce.

Ordering more in general. Yeah, the last week or so I’ve been online shopping more! Maybe I’m just ready for summer or something. I’m getting super sick of my pajamas (who thought I’d ever say that, certainly not me) so I’ve ordered a skirt and dress and cute top. So I’ll have new things to review soon, for those who are sick of my Covid-19 ramblings. Believe me, I understand!

Are you finding any daily pleasures out there? Please share!

I’ve been writing cards and sending them to friends/relatives! I actually had a ton of birthday/celebration/random cards and am normally SO BAD at remembering to write and mail them- I think this was the first mother’s day that my mom actually received her card before the holiday instead of the week after. I’ve been writing ‘just because’ notes to friends and decorating them with stickers. I’ve also been baking fancier more labor intense desserts- I made babka for the second time ever.

Blogs are my other guilty pleasure. Even tho I have a totally different lifestyle and probably will never buy a luxury bag, I’ve been reading your blog for a few years and really enjoy reading about your fancy vacations and purchase reviews!

Hi Kat! Long time follower, first time commenting. I love your blog and love seeing pictures of your bags….I enjoy them vicariously through your blog. I have been wanting to buy a luxury bag for a while and with the COVID-19 situation and my looming 50th, I’ve decided to treat myself. I’m trying to decide between a Chanel (maybe a flap) or a Hermes (not a Birkin or Kelly) but one of the cheaper ones that would be in the same price range as the Chanel. Any thoughts? My lifestyle doesn’t suit any of the fancier bags and no one who I know will likely recognize any of these bags…I want to take it out wjust want to buy one for me 🙂

Thank you Kat! I’m trying to decide which Hermes would work best for me or if I should get a Chanel flap. It would be something that I could use for running errands but also for going out for a casual dinner with friends or family. I use a large Longchamp Le Pliage for work on a daily basis…I am a teacher and need a bag that can hold a multitudes of books and papers. I want something nicer for the weekends. I love the Jypsiere but would really appreciate any other suggestions too.

Chanels are REALLy expensive now right? I love the classicness of the classic flap but have you considered the Evelyne?

I know the question was posed to Kat, but what about a Hermes garden party? it is casual and can also be dressed up for a casual dinner.

    Kat-
I just want to thank you for your blog. In these times of upheaval and days blending in from one to another, your blog keeps me on schedule and on task! I’ve been super cautious as my 87 year old mother is living with us and has respiratory issues– but slowly I am burning out on cooking (as are my kids of my cooking) and getting a few more meals delivered from restaurants. Especially boba. Lol. But we are still making our sourdough bread and pasta!

    Hi Kat
I live in Australia where we are also in lockdown – although the restrictions are slowly becoming less ridged as our Covid numbers are pretty well under control now. A few weeks ago when we’d been in lockdown for two weeks I sent an invite to ‘Dinner’ to my husband and daughters ( 26 and 28 ) who are currently living with us. We all dressed for the occasion ( that mean we changed out of out pyjamas!) and the evening began with cocktails by candlelight with French cafe music
followed by a candle lit 2 course dinner (curtesy of a lovely local restaurant). We then played a favourite board game with gift wrapped prizes for the winners (bath salts, candles, candies that I had stocked up on prior to lock down) and the drinks flowed. It was a lovely evening and we all went to bed smiling and feeling like we’d had a great ‘night out’. For any one out there who is desperate for a bit of a cheer up – I highly recommend a ‘night out’ at home!

Listening to the music of my youth. I has forgotten how good it was. Now with two kids in the house, it’s a treat to put on noise cancelling headphones and zone out with some good music!
