Weekend Update

Sale PSA: Classic brown loafers from Madewell, now 40% off, a silk jumpsuit from DVF, now 60% of, all Jo Malone, currently 15% off at Nordstrom – considering trying a new scent, and this fun trio set of leather envelopes from Hermes, now just $625 (great price), at Fashionphile

1. Sharing a recent purchase, via J.Crew – this knit midi dress, currently 40% off.

I love this! It hasn’t arrived yet, so I’ll be sure to update how it goes. Is it a little grandma (which was also the one star review)? Yes, but that’s what I love lately. And the price is reasonable. I just wish I knew more about what that “wool mix” was in the materials – it is a pet peeve when stores don’t list exact content.

2. Would love to hear your thoughts on this article, via The Atlantic – The Porch Pirate of Portero Hill. I’ve heard reactions on both sides of the spectrum – anger (how could people be so heartless, so cruel to someone is so much less fortunate and privileged), to the other sort of anger (do you just have to accept your packages being stolen over and over?).

3. Sharing this piece, via Jia Tolentino for The New Yorker – Virtue and Vanity at Reformation. I still like Reformation! But haven’t purchased anything for a while. Not a lot of “mom of toddler” outfits which I know is the opposite of their aesthetic.

4. If you haven’t read it already, check out this piece, via Vice, on a huge AirBnB scam. Ugh. I’ve actually never rented a place but plan on doing it one day, because everyone saying it’s way better if you have kids.

5. This week, I read The Thoughtful Dresser, by Linda Grant.

Did one of you recommend this book? I really feel like someone did but I can’t figure out who (if it was you please comment so I can thank you!). I enjoyed this. It’s kind of a book on fashion by a literary writer, with lots of thoughts and musings about the role clothing plays in our lives. If you like reading about fashion – not necessarily how to dress, but just how to think about it – I recommend The Thoughtful Dresser.

For those in the US – have a great long weekend!

I looked at the dress on JCrew’s site…it says wool and nylon.

I have used AirBNB a couple times in the past and it was fine, and a lot of the PF bloggers still love it, but I’m definitely a bit wary of the fact that there is so much potential for poor / scammy behavior. Now I’m even MORE wary after reading that article! I tend to go for family suite hotel types of places like Residence Inn and La Quinta which is generally quite basic but very family and pet friendly.

We recently just did the Air BNB/Residence Inn calc and I barely saw any advantage for Air BNB. RI had a pool to boot!

Gosh I just don’t understand how people with kids (or at least more than 1 kid) stay at a hotel for an extended time. We have done hotels occasionally, usually a suite, and it is really tough to tiptoe around with naps, bedtimes, etc. We have used Airbnb extensively and have only had 2 not great experiences – both were at Airbnbs that didn’t have many reviews so now we only stay at well verified places.
When we travel without kids it’s hotels all the way though 😉
