On Sun Protection

Sale PSA: This adorable knit dress from Sandro, now $300, classic suede sandals from Stuart Weitzman, now $228 with code SAVENOW, and if you watch Succession – here is Shiv’s excellent cream jumpsuit, now 30% off.

Not exactly a sale but Nordstrom has a ton of gift with purchases for beauty – I’ve made some purchases myself, this is how I stock up on travel goodies!

Also! Just realized Everlane has a few cashmere styles on sale for a few days for $100 – I like the classic turtleneck!

So recently I had kind of a scare. A little dark spot appeared on my lip, seemingly out of nowhere. I have not seen a dermatologist in more than a decade (who has the time?? Between all the kid’s stuff??) so put it off until finally I made an appointment for a checkup. The earliest one I could get was two months out. Which I took. Upon which the spot proceeded to get larger and darker, all within a week, and then my husband got freaked out enough to make me make an emergency appointment. Even though I wear sunscreen almost everyday I have ignored my lips and so I was getting worried – luckily, the dermatologist confirmed it was nothing, just a little spot which he could try to get off with lasers (and a lot of extra money). Which so far I have not opted for. Actually, you can see a little bit of the spot here.

However! The derma also lectured me about my sun exposure. I’m constantly in the sun – out with the kids at parks, pushing my daughter in her stroller and and yelling at my son not to go too far into the street. Driving them around blah blah blah. So after this scare I decided to get serious about protecting myself against sun damage (some of this is vanity – wrinkles!). Here are some of my favorite products and ways I’m protecting myself against the harsh, wonderfully warm, rays of the sun:

Sunscreen. Duh. My favorite product right now is the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen: SPF 40, which I feel is adequate, and the price is high but not too high. A tube also lasts me ages. One new thing I started to do – I slather it on my neck as well. Yeah it uses up the product more but why would I spend so much on clothes and just ignore my neck? Hello Nora Ephron?

PS: I also had previously purchased this Glossier Shield, which I liked but I find the Supergoop seems to last longer. I will say that the Glossier Shield goes on super light and weightless – it reminded me more of Japanese brands.

Lip protection. Because while I’m OK with my current brown spot, I don’t want them all over. So I’m being more careful now. My favorite product remains the Fresh Tinted Sugar SPF: I love these although it is agitating how expensive they are. But I haven’t been able to find a decent dupe! WHY? I’ve heard Kiehls Butterstick suggested but they are only $2 less. Anyone? Do I just have to buy this holiday set?

I also use this Supergoop lip shield, for a clear option. It’s sold out on a bunch of sites so I stocked up. Saks still has them.

Ooh. I also just found these Sun Bum ones, for $6! The only thing holding me back is I have a few plain Sun Bum chapsticks and I don’t really like their scents. Still, I’ve ordered one to try. Maybe I’ll do a round up post later.

Neck protection. Because as I mentioned above, I have been trying to give a little more love to my neck! I realize that I have little freckles along the left side of my neck – super common apparently, because the sun comes through the window when I drive, and I haven’t always used SPF. Even though I use SPF now, I wanted something else to protect it – so I picked up a few of these bandanas from Madewell, very soft, easy to tuck into a bag, and well priced too. I also bought this summerweight scarf from J.Crew, on super sale, which I leave in the car – I just throw it on if I’ve forgotten a shawl or one of my bandanas.

Hats. I am very into hats. I have, no joke, four of these Everlane baseball caps – partially because I wanted to order another black one, and they have free shipping with two items, so I bought yet another one. They are my perfect chic baseball hat and their adjustable elastic means they fit my giant head. The one thing I dislike about the baseball style is it doesn’t give me all around protection – protects my face, yes, but not my neck. For that I use the Scala sun hats I mentioned earlier – these are another option that I keep in my car and have on hand for certain outfits.

Hand protection. Which means gloves, for when I’m driving, because they get shined on too. I will share that I have purchased these quite hideous gloves from Amazon. They actually do a decent job but I do look like a crazy lady in them and my husband flinches whenever he sees them. But who cares if I can have young looking hands!! But now that the weather’s cooling I think I’m going to get a fingerless pair like the cashmere ones above, $45. Way more chic, no? I really like the color of the pair above.

Okay! These are some of the ways I’m protecting myself from the sun! Now I want to hear what you do!

Praise The Lord, it was just a scare! My Mother had a spot that got bigger. Sadly, she passed before I was able to make an appointment for that??. I really like the Berry Kiehls butterstick. It’s the most sheer and prettiest of their selection. The other colors seem to have a different texture.
I really like the Fresh balms. The color selection is beautiful . The problem with the Fresh balms is that they melt really easy. Tracy is hot.

Any of the Banana Boat or Blistex lip balms with spf 30-50 is my go-to. You can find them at Target, CVS, Walgreens, Walmart so it’s more accessible when you run out. I don’t feel it necessary to spend a lot to get adequate sun protection while keeping my lips moisturized. I have them all over the house, my purse and work bag. I don’t buy regular non-spf lip balms for day time.

That supergoop mp block isn’t good for daily wear, but not enough for vacation. I love the Shiseido urban block and la Roche Posay lip spf (although I’m bad about applying it daily).

I actually think any lip balm with spf would be better than Fresh. I have tried so many of those…they always feel too thick to me. My favorite is Amilab…unfortunately, no SPF.

I love jack black lip balm spf 25. They come in all varieties of scent; I usually stick with shea butter. They cost $8, which isn’t too bad. Sephora vib sale is going on so you can save as much as 20%.

I have to also vote/suggest the La Roche Posay.. Anthelios line. I know it’s pricey…but it’s so lightweight and smooth. The lip products are also good.

Kat, I also have those lip spots and freckles on my neck (and face!)… so I am trying to avoid too much sun exposure too. Wish my 20 something self would have listened to my own mother and not been so much in the sun….

Kat- how scary! I’m glad you’re okay. I’ve been telling myself to be good about sun protection for years now (I’m 31) but I have very sensitive acne prone skin and it’s so easy to just forego it, especially since during the work week I’m usually outside no more than an hour or so a day (no judgement please!). But recently my boyfriend and I were playing with the “FaceApp” and omg that will scare you into any anti-aging precaution (side note that app is another form of sexism because he looked hot while I very much did not)! Also- I found a small sun spot on the back of my hand recently and freaked out and told my best friend who is a dermatology resident and lo and behold- she recommended (and bought me) the same gloves you have! I feel crazy when I use them, but luckily 95% of the time I’m driving by myself and I actually feel proud of myself for using them. I’m going to add a bandana next. Thanks for such a relevant post!

My screen is so dirty that I had to wipe it clean to tell if the spot is from your picture or from my screen, lol. I second La Roche Posay. I skip sun screen when I’m wearing my BB cream with SPF.

I have had great luck with LaMer sunscreen 50. It doesn’t bother my skin (I have a number of autoimmune challenges) even though I might apply it three times during the day. It’s expensive, and while I moved on from the LaMer skin care line, I couldn’t find a sunscreen that worked better for me.

I spent much of my youth riding my horse….yes, in the sun. We didn’t know much, if anything, about sun damage 60-70 years ago…,,and I’m paying the piper.

Chiming in with La Roche Posay spf. I bought mine in Canada because the US FDA still hasn’t approved Mexoryl SX and XL which are more stable and long-lasting spf filters. My mom also wears hideous cheap fabric gloves when driving, seems to work for her. I use Coola lip lux spf tinted lip balm but i don’t recommend it. The color is patchy and it actually feels drying. I bought a tube of aquaphor lip balm with spf so let’s see if it works. Don’t forget to put spf in the part of your hair. Around 10% of skin cancer growth is found on the scalp iirc.

Never leave home without a sunscreen. I think a lipstick provides good sun protection too, especially the creams and mattes. Being a typical Asian, we hide ourselves from the sun most of the time. I’ve been noticing a small brown spot on my left cheekbone, yikes. I love Fresh Tinted Sugar but they really melt easily. Then I found Loccitane’s lip balm, marketed similar like Fresh in their metallic tubes and all, but it was discontinued some time back. It doesn’t melt like Fresh. Loccitane apparently released some lip balms which I’m happy to give them a go.

I’ve been using olay complete w SPF 15 (combination) since I was in college. I thot about switching to some fancy Sephora-esque brand when I had more disposable income but nothing’s worked as well! It’s so cheap I just slather heaps on my face and neck. No guilt. Def credit it (and Asian genes) for keeping me looking not 39. Have also been playing with tarte’s sunscreen powder for that extra layer of protection.

Try Coolibar skin toned gloves. They come with grips so you can drive without hands slipping and you can still use your smartphone with the glove tips.

Also second Jack Black spf lip balms

Check out fiddysnails 3 fingers rule for sunscreen application. Daiso sells driving gloves that extend up to the arms.
