Weekend Update

Sale PSA: Adorable unisex rainbow pajamas from Room Service, now $41, a great crossbody tote from Madewell, now 50% off (I love both colors), and some cashmere crewneck and v-neck sweaters from Everlane, now just $70.

Also! If you’ve been eyeing certain classic Prada shoes that don’t go on sale – Saks is having a coupon right now that applies to them! I just used it for this pair which I’ve been eyeing for a long time (Nordstrom will also price match, and you can read reviews here).

1. This week, I’m sharing a sale find – this pretty floral dress, from LoveShackFancy.

I love it!! So romantic and pretty. And it’s cotton too which I always prefer. I’ve been trying to talk myself into it but I might need the double 00 and I might also be ahh..missing other assets. But I naturally love prairie styles and have to actively stop myself from buying too much so I’ve been waiting. We’ll see!

2. Wanted to share this piece, via The SF Chronicle, about how to prepare yourself for a good end of life.

3. Loved this piece, via The Atlantic: The Joys of a Quiet Paris. Makes me want to go with the kids in August.

4. An interesting article, via The NY Times, bout people in their seventies caring for their parents in their nineties.

5. This week, I’m reading Heat and Light, by Jennifer Haigh.

And wow! I went into this book not knowing much – I knew it was about fracking, which I knew virtually nothing about, but I’m about halfway through and really liking it. It follows various people in a small town and the impact of the arrival of natural gas drilling – which sounds dry I know, and to be honest it might be if you’re in a certain mood, but if you want some thoughtful, incredibly well written novel – I would recommend this one. I don’t want it to sound boring – at times this one really moves too! But definitely requires a little more concentration. If you’re in the mood for really great literary fiction that isn’t too overwritten or flowery, I highly recommend Heat and Light.

Thanks for those 2 articles. Good information in the one about preparing for a good “end of life” experience. I am 68 and hope it’s not soon, but something to think about for sure. The article about people in their 70s caring for parents in their 90s is also thought-provoking. I am not in that position…both of my parents have been gone for over 20 years. It is a blessing to have your parents around for longer, but I can’t say there are not advantages to not having to care for Mom and Dad in their late 90s.

Thank you so much for sharing the article about the elderly children caring for their elderly parents. I was prepared to care for my Mom until I physically couldn’t anymore.
My plan was to care for her full time when I retired. I can retire in 3 years. I miss her very much.

I found the Chronicle article quite interesting. Personally, I’m all about quality of life over length of life. Several years ago, I changed to a new PCP because my previous physician did not hold the same view as I did. Although there’s no guarantee that anything in life will go as planned, at least having a plan is better than not having one.
