Weekend Update

1. New on my wish list, these lovely yellow slingbacks from Mansur Gavriel.

I haven’t looked at MG for a while, not since the whole bucket bag craze, but I know they’ve done some nice things since then. Nothing really held me as much as the bucket however, so I largely stayed away, until I saw these pumps. I really like them! And I’ve heard great things about their shoes (have you tried them)? I might wait until sale season, but these are on the list

2. Thank you Stacie, for sending over this article about Goldman Sachs and a 13 year old gender lawsuit that until I read this article, I had no idea about (via Bloomberg).

3. Have you ever subscribed to Birchbox or any other beauty box? Did you know it recently tried to put itself up for sale? Read about it in Fast Company- Basically, Nobody Wanted To Buy Birchbox. Kind of a snarky title, no? The creators of Birchbox were the year above me in grad school (little facts like this are what make me sigh about my own life) and it is incredibly hard to build a business like this. They were knocked off a ton but deserve credit for being innovators (not to mention, female founders).

4. My top recommended reading of the week – this great article, via The New Yorker, about Japan’s Rent-A-Family industry.

5. This week, I read The Mars Room, by Rachel Kushner.

In short: one of my favorite reads of the year so far. Gorgeous writing and I must have read the final pages of the last chapter probably four or five times. I’m a fan of Kushner, who hits that excellent spot of being both a really great writer and someone who keeps you wanting to turn the pages. That being said, I can see this not being for everyone – if you want something a little more “summer”, I might go for The Perfect Mother, which I also finished this week (though please note the content isn’t so light – there’s a missing baby). You really can’t go wrong with either. But I highly, highly recommend The Mars Room. So glad to have had this read. Perfection.
