Today I’m both incredibly nervous and excited to share with you all something that has utterly consumed me since the beginning of last year (aside from baby and toddler, of course). A project very near and dear, which I have dedicated my heart, my soul, my every free minute and hour to. My debut novel, Family Trust, which will be released this October by HarperCollins/William Morrow (available for pre-order now, at Indiebound, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble).
If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you might know that I love to read. I purchase and consume a crazy amount of books. It’s like breathing to me. And I would be happy to be a reader my entire life with nothing more – because there are just so many wonderful books out there and there are few better feelings for me in life than finishing a really great, satisfying book.
That being said, writing a book had always been one of my dreams – albeit in a hazy “one day in the future” sort of way, along with other bucket list items like “photo with emperor penguin”. Then, at some point during my second pregnancy, I suddenly realized that I would not have very much free time for the foreseeable future. And it was always my goal to try to finish a manuscript, so I started writing down some ideas, and it slowly grew and developed…until we’re now at the point where I’m writing to you all today, to share with you all my first novel.
Of course for those of you who have experience with publishing…you know that it isn’t that simple…and I can definitely share more about that side of the journey later on, if you guys are interested. Publishing is a crazy business and I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface in terms of all I have to learn, and do. Especially because I don’t have a traditional “writing” background (MFA) or any publishing experience, I’ve quite often felt completely lost (is one of you secretly Joan Didion, lurking here because your literati friends don’t understand your raging Hermes addiction? If so can I please email you for a blurb?). But today, I’m just so happy to be sharing with you something so near and dear to my heart for so long. You can read the full description at the links below, but in short – Family Trust is a novel set in Silicon Valley, which follows an Asian American family as it comes to terms with the illness (and bequest) of its patriarch. There’s the husband, the first wife, the adult children, the grandchildren, the younger second wife…and all of these characters have their own agendas, insecurities, and problems. I really hope you enjoy it. And I hope it makes you laugh!

I’ve been an enthusiastic follower of your blog for years and it’s always amazed me how you could have a full-time job and a regular blog, and then have 2 babies and have time to read all those books and now write and publish an entire novel while having 2 babies! I would love to know about the whole book writing and publishing process (I think many of your followers would love to know as well) – how did you write a book with 2 little babies, get an agent, go through the book publishing process etc. Could you please write a post on that?
I can’t wait to read your book! I have a question though. I live in Bangok, Thailand and am not a big online shopper and have never ordered from Amazon before so I am not sure what “pre-order” means. Does that mean we order now and get the book in October? Or if we order now we will get the book now (in advance?) . I normally order books from the US at my local international bookstore (Kinokuniya, which is a well known Japanese bookseller with branches around Asia). I can order it through them in Bangkok but do I have to wait till October to order it?
