Weekend Update

1. Please be introduced to my latest shoe lust (and it is strong) – these Gucci Ophelia sandals.

Ugh I want these so bad. So very much! I haven’t felt that way about a pair of Gucci shoes in a while, too. The reviews say that these are comfortable and I just think they look so gorgeous and unique on the foot. I’m sure there will be a zillion knockoffs but I always find it hard to replicate Gucci – just one step in either direction and it become a little kitchy.

I’m also thinking about these gold sandals (I’m encouraged that they say the heel height is 88mm – but it looks taller than that? I can dream. There’s a silver version too, that’s 75mm, but that looks way shorter. There’s also a GORGEOUS black pump (check here for the more conservative office version). But I think a sandal for this design, no?

2. Your “rolling eyes but can’t stop reading” recommendation of the week – this article, via The Guardian, about Powder Mountain, an elite ski club for millennials. Why haven’t I seen this article more widely cited? Is it because of Trump sucking up all the oxygen? I think there’s quite a lot of material for satire, no??

3. An interesting article, via Vanessa Friedman at the NY Times, about Elizabeth Holmes and the rise and fall of the black turtleneck. What do we think? Also on the topic of black turtlenecks –  whenever I need to laugh, this clip from Silicon Valley never fails to make me laugh out loud.

4. A fascinating article, via The New Yorker, about the Jahi McMath case – What Does It Mean To Die? A long and worthwhile read.

5. This week I’m recommending Dept. of Speculation, by Jenny Offill.

This is one of those books which I normally would shy away from – it’s a bit more “conceptual”, for lack of a better word, it jumps around in the narrative, and its not necessarily heavy on and definitely not a linear plot. Yet I blew through it. It’s one of those compelling volumes about marriage and having children and the balance of career and family and something that I think any modern woman can relate to. And, you can read it in a few focused hours (or over the course of a weekend). Highly recommend Dept. of Speculation.

I love Friedman’s writing by all means but thought this piece was unnecessary. Ordered Dept. of speculation! Sounds like a relatable book!

I rolled my eyes all the way to the back of my head while reading that Guardian article. 🙂
The Jahi McMath story hit close to home for me. This past November, a much beloved aunt had a massive stroke, and we had to make the type of end-of-life decisions that Nalia and her family rebuffed. Don’t get me wrong, I feel deeply for them, and their loss, but that poor girl is gone. There is no quality of life there, to be honest – and I say this as a person who sat by my aunt’s bed for 3 days (she was warm to the touch, all vitals monitored, but she was gone in every sense that mattered. She mercifully passed away on her own after five days. We knew that, but were waiting for her son who lives outside the US to get a visa to come over and say goodbye. He got the visa the same morning she passed away). And I can see why they’re bristling because of how the whole affair was handled by the hospital (I’m black, and there’s DEFINITELY something there), but there are a lot of conflicting stories out there about whether she was fed by her family or the hospital staff before the hemorrhaging started, so it is hard to figure out who’s being truthful. They need to let her go.

I’m so sorry to hear about your experience and I didn’t know about the conflicting stories, either. Researching more now, thanks!

Minimally conscious state is a really tough and controversial diagnosis. It’s strange that they’re declared her dead (as opposed to brain dead) while on a ventilator. A fascinating article, thank you.
On a lighter note: get the Guccis! It’s triple points at Nordstrom!
