Hello from London! I’m just here for a quick work trip, but it’s lovely to be spending a few days in one of my favorite cities. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
1. My old white blazer from Zara is finally starting to fray and give out, and the tailoring costs would come close to the actual cost of the blazer. I’ve been eyeing this clean cut version in a crisp white from Theory.
2. I was cleaning out my papers the other day (hello, tax season) and across an article that I had printed out from more than ten years ago, via The Washington Post. I was thrilled to find it available online still and wanted to share – Acquiring Minds – a fascinating look into luxury consumption in the United States. Has it changed at all in the last decade?
3. How cool is this feature from Vanity Fair that shows the desks of various heavy hitters from a variety of industries? I thought my favorite would be Martha Stewart’s…
…but it was actually Carolina Herrera! Love her inscribed pencils. And love that she still uses pencils.
4. My book recommendation this week is a very good novel about Richard III, called The Sunne in Splendour.
Do I have a particular fondness for novels around the Tudors and that period? Yes. (So much drama!).
Did I pick up this specific novel because I had heard that The War of the Roses inspired some of the Game of Thrones series? Yes, yes!
But those two pieces of background aside, this book is a fantastic read for lovers of both non-fiction, and fiction (and especially historical fiction). Worth a gander, especially if you like books about Henry VIII and that period.
Have a wonderful weekend!

February 21, 2014 at 6:53 amYou always find the best articles. I just sat engrossed in the Post article over my morning coffee. I feel like it’s still pretty relevant despite being written over 10 years ago. So many great anecdotes in that piece.

February 21, 2014 at 9:39 amLove the Theory jacket, I can see you wearing it, absolutely. Sharon Kay Penman is such a great historical fiction writer. Make sure you read Here Be Dragons too, I loved that one, many years ago. In fact I may re-read it! Have a great weekend.

February 21, 2014 at 2:21 pmI really liked the article you linked to in your post. I used to love shopping for expensive goods but now I love the stock market. Other than in my 20’s, I would never have chosen designer goods over owning my own home. I have not had a mortgage since I was fifty, and the freedom that affords me is immeasurable psychologically. Yes, I still have the taxes, insurance and upkeep, but I don’t have to worry about escalating rents or interest rates should I choose to relocate. I have been lucky, made both good (and some bad) choices along the way, and chose an (average salaried) career in education, so I am not wealthy.
I also love the Theory jacket you posted. I think it’s elegant and classic.

February 22, 2014 at 10:20 amThanks for the article. I’m not sure much has changed except that prices have doubled – I still see people at Barney’s with 20 shoe boxes stacked high next to them. I wonder where the people in the article are now and how the downturn a few years later affected them – several were in service or selling professions. Did it change their outlook and buying habits? Maybe you can hunt down a few of them and do an interview?

February 23, 2014 at 8:30 amJust like how people are still at Barneys buying 20x pairs of shoes, I think prob the service professionals are still doing OK too, since it’s pretty correlated at that level

February 23, 2014 at 10:21 amIn the aggregate, yes, but individually there could be differences – and one or two might have changed their attitude. Personally I’m buying fewer goods…and more real estate.
