My Real Real Experience – Buying

First of all – sorry to be late with the post, I was at the Tucson Book Festival (which was wonderful! And my first time in Tucson! (hi LL from the author dinner!) and could not finish the post in time. Usually I try to plan it on to have it on Monday but sometimes I slip. Onward!

So, a few weeks ago I posted about my experience selling on The Real Real – now, I’ll share about my experience buying.

Okay – just a bit of history. When it first started The Real Real had some CRAZY deals – unfortunately I didn’t really participate too much but I remember seeing some great prices come across my screen at the time. Unfortunately I was neck deep in baby and never really did much shopping and plus it was all just quite overwhelming….

Cut to late last year, when I began to snoop around the site in earnest. I noticed that the prices had gone up…but that there were still some good deals to be had. I started looking around, made some purchases, and have some learnings.

Wait for what you love. A TON of stuff comes across the site. I had been wanting the green MaxMara coat above for years, after seeing my friend Alice in hers. I had tried to search for an alternative in vain but the cut was never right, or the color wasn’t the right one. And finally, of course, it pops up on the The Real Real. I had been checking eBay sporadically for years by the way…never showed. I say to wait for what you love because…

Pricing isn’t always consistent. I had seen similar MaxMara coats go for around $300, so I was super optimistic but then this showed up and was around $800. ARGH!!!!!! Coming from the selling side, I can say that pricing can vary wildly and so you just never know how some stuff will get priced. Some pieces are priced too low and get snapped up within seconds…some are way too high and sit for months and months. Prepare to possibly be frustrated and hopefully delighted.

Also..if you don’t have to have the piece right away, you can get a discount. I’ve found for certain items, they won’t unlock the “20%” offer in the first week or two of consignment. If you can wait it out (which I did for the green coat above, which killed me but I had to do it ) usually the 20% gets unlocked, unless it’s a certain brand like Hermes or Chanel. And Chanel RTW gets unlocked too.

Have a list of brands you love, including those smaller ones that you always admired that maybe you didn’t buy because they were $$. In my opinion, the smaller brands are where the jackpots are. Like, those super flashy Gucci items or Chanel jackets and stuff – those are always going to priced at a certain level. But items like a lady like Altuzarra dress (be careful with Altuzarra, sometimes I see the Target stuff in there, at ridiculous prices), or a short coat from The Row, or even a green Hermes cashmere cropped poncho for $220 – this is where the good stuff is, my friends (and I debated over that poncho before I decided to share it!!). Case in point – the coat above. It is Akris main label and I LOVE IT and it retailed for $3,990 because it is double face cashmere and Akris main line is crazily priced and I got it for… $200. YES. And it wasn’t even like I pounced on it, it sat on the site for weeks! And it is fully reversible and has huge pockets. It’s incredible and a deal like this is what keeps you coming back. I wore it on the plane and didn’t feel nervous at all because yeah I got it for $200!

But because of the deal factor…stuff goes fast. Faster than you think sometimes. So beware. I was sweating bullets during the MaxMara wait and it was in people’s carts multiple times. But also..

Stuff gets returned often, too. I’ve “hearted” a few items and seen them get sold and come back. So even if you lose out on an item, I’d at the very least bookmark and check back.

Order multiple pieces to try out if you are interested because you the site charges for both shipping + returns. For those of us spoiled by Nordstrom, Net-A-Porter, Matches, and oh…almost every luxury site, it’s a bummer. But I guess it’s how they manage their costs, right?

Be careful with handbags. A lot of them are final sale only. I hear a lot of complaints about fakes (if you go to my selling post, scroll down to the comments and you can read Jaime’s experience…actually I’d recommend reading all the comments!). The tiny good news is that it seems TRR is so used to this that they generally take stuff back, but yeah….not confidence inspiring.

Whew! This post was long because more and more tidbits kept coming to me…another reason why I was a day late! I hope this was helpful and I’d LOVE to hear about some of your favorite TRR buys! And any other tips you have!

I have had some GREAT experience with purchases from The Real Real — Isabel Marant sweaters (crazy overpriced at retail if you ask me), a vintage Chanel red houndstooth coat (for only $400!), an older style YSL bag. I did get burned by a swimsuit; I didn’t catch the Final Sale on ALL swim. Ugh. But the website is my rabbit hole. I can get lost for hours!!

TRR can have such good deals, especially for smaller high-end brands and good cashmere. Funnily enough one of my best find was also Akris with the same price points- a pristine Akris Punto shearling coat for around $200 (retail $3990k) that i am wearing all the time this winter. I am trying to get better at not buying just because it’s a good deal though! Recently I snapped up a pristine pair of vintage Hermes leather pants for $200ish. Unfortunately i had nowhere to wear it so i returned, and the shipping+return adds up over time. I suppose I could have tried to sell on ebay, but i don’t have the time or energy..

I’ve had some really good luck on the The RealReal with some obscure items on my wish list. The site is really easy to search and there is so much inventory. I’ve had a lot of luck if I’m looking for a specific Hermes scarf. I’d love to trying buying an Hermes Trim or Market bag (two of my favorite styles) but I never have because of the no return policy on handbags.

It’s my rabbit hole also and I’ve found a few grails there. I remember lusting over a buttery, velvety Celine hobo bag in tan saddle leather in Neiman Marcus many years ago but the $2800 price tag was out. Fast forward several years and I found one on TRR in pristine condition (Barney’s tag still attracted – God bless the seller’s heart!) for $900 dollars. I also love searching The Row cashmere sweaters, fine jewelry (esp earrings) and home items. Agree that the best deals are less “popular” but still exquisite made labels. Before Phoebe announced her departure, Celine pieces went at a decent price (100% Cashmere jacket $350 hangs in my closet) but, sadly, they have now doubled – if not more.

Jane – I’ve bought two 35 Trims from them and, fortunately, they are authentic! I don’t think the Trim (or the Market) was ever high profile enough to be copied at a high quality, super fake level and I feel comfortable with my experience with Hermes to buy second hand. You may want to give it a try. There’s a lovely Tabac Camel one there right now……..

That said, no way would I buy a Birkin, Kelly or any recent models from them.

I love TRR! There’s no way I’m paying $200+ for a Proenza Schouler T-shirt, but I’ll pay $40. The Akris coat you got is such a great find. Currently, I’ve been looking at a a Chloe dress from 2010 that’s selling for a little under $300 on TRR. On eBay it’s selling for $900…And I learned the hard way about the handbags being final sale. I didn’t notice the final sale language and couldn’t return the bag I wanted. Thankfully, I learned to like the bag and use it almost every day.

One other tip I have is the app is actually useful. If you’re looking for something specific, you can save searches as feeds, and that way you can more easily pounce on stuff.

Also, I love how your “long” post is my version of a short one!

Katherine, I want to thank you and the other commenters for such good tips and info. Scrolling through TRR app is now how i decompress at night, LOL. I ordered my first TRR items last week and they are scheduled to arrive today. If I have anything noteworthy to contribute I’ll reply.

My first TRR order arrived yesterday, which was three Chanel jackets. I’m keeping two of the three jackets, one of which was $316! I feel like I can be less “precious” with these items because they don’t feel like huge investments. I’m sold on the TRR. Has anyone subscribed to the $10/month option where you get first 24hr access to sales?

I’m also consigning my first item with TRR, a dress I purchased final sale from Tory Burch. Looking forward to seeing how this goes.

Hi Kathy! It was so wonderful to meet you in Tucson – I hope you enjoyed your time here. You were so gracious about my ‘fangirling’ 🙂
I’ve honestly been wary of TRR after seeing some posts on tPF, but may have to check them out after your amazing tips on how to navigate it, and everyone else’s comments about their positive experiences here!

TRR came through for me with DVF dresses (Hai, Zarita with tags!), Tom Ford, Chloe, Lanvin…all at ridiculous prices. I’ve stuck to either pristine or tagged items with them because of all the tales on tPF (yup, co-sign on this Leslie) and elsewhere. The bags I did get from them did get authenticated at stores, so thank goodness for that. I’m eyeing a Goyard as a tote, but I’m not about to buy from them. I think I’ll bite the bullet and hit up a store in Europe.

Lilian, please, please, please don’t buy Goyard, particularly the St. Louis tote, from TRR. I bought one and am fairly knowledgeable about the brand; I have about 10 pieces purchased at their boutiques. Many of theirs are not genuine but the counterfeit versions are so good people are fooled.

I can recommend a great sales associate at the NM Goyard boutique in Chicago – his name is Andy. He always goes above and beyond. Anyone interested, just let me know.

Here’s an update on my fake bag experience – I returned the tote, they would only give me site credit (which is alright with me), and the bag is now back on the site. You can see it here: https://www.therealreal.com/products/women/handbags/totes/goyard-goyardine-st-louis-pm-w-slash-pouch-rDiNyw-KV14-rJU4RoDfC1U

    I cannot believe it!

Wow! I’m surprised (maybe I shouldn’t be?) that they would do that. I guess I’m never buying a bag from TRR

I love TRR! while I was lucky purchasing an hermes trim I, that turned out to be authentic, I would’t buy handbags from them again it’s just too risky with the non-refundable policy.I get a lot of designer items for the fraction of the price I recently scored a Burberry Coat for $125.00 that was originally $800.00!
