The Chanel Reissue 224

Today I thought I would do a review on one of my favorite versatile bags that I frequently take with me when we travel. I’ve been receiving more questions about crossbody bag recommendations, and this is one of my favorites. The bag in question is the classic Chanel reissue, in the (I believe) tiniest size, the 224. Reissues start at 224, and go from 225, 226, 227, all the way to 228.

Chanel 224 Reissue

Chanel makes a lot of great “mini” bags including the popular “mini” flap and the wallet on chain, but I ended up choosing the reissue style in the end because the small size was essentially a smaller version of the larger bag, in everything from construction to design. A lot of the time I find that these smaller bags have made some tradeoffs in design (of course there’s usually a cost savings as well) – pockets are missing, or the strap is smaller, etc.

The reissue in the 224 size has everything its larger siblings have – the double flap, zip pocket, front open pocket, leather lining.

Chanel 224 Reissue Open

You probably have to be a lover of mini bags (as I am) to really like the 224. The bag, while small, I think holds a good amount for its little size. Just the essentials – my iPhone 6 Plus (yes with a case), a small card case (not pictured, I use the Citizen Twill from Hermes), sunglasses in a thin cloth pouch, and a lipstick. There’s a small pocket in the back that I use for tickets, a metro card, etc.

Chanel Reissue 224 What Fits Inside

And now..a demonstration of why I love this bag and bring it with me on travels often. you can wear it a bunch of ways…including crossbody! The best way to wear a bag while traveling, in my opinion.

Chanel 224 Reissue Front

I also like that this little bag really easily transitions from day to evening….you can just double up the straps for a chic night out.

Chanel 224 Reissue Side

The reissue can also be folded flat, though I can understand why some people might hesitate to do so. I do fold mine when I pack it in my carryon, and it’s always survived the flight easily.

Chanel 224

Overall, I can highly recommend this little bag – it’s a classic and one of my favorites that Chanel makes. If I had unlimited funds I would definitely be looking into another color – but for now I’m happy with my black!

A big downside is the price. Chanel is of course always expensive. The 224 retails now for something like $4000 (last time I checked) – its equivalent on the classic flap side, the mini flap, is somewhere around $2700 I believe? That’s quite a difference! And wow, the prices just keep going up, every time I check.

By the way – for a few alternate versions of this bag, I’d recommend the Stella McCartney Falabella for a fraction of the price (under $1,000), as well as the PS1 by Proenza Schouler (fits moreΒ as well), for underΒ $1,400.

The reissue is my favorite Chanel bag! I like the 226 size for everyday. It’s lightweight and so pretty without any obvious CC anywhere. The 224 is the perfect size for going out and taking the essentials. I think the price is around $4200 but it might have gone up with a price increase. I’ve heard a price increase is coming in May. Beautiful classic and elegant!

    Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Thanks so much Amy! The Reissue is my favorite as well…so discreet πŸ™‚ I just wish sometimes the chains didn’t leave weird imprints in my shoulder lol.

I was going to leave a comment, but Amy you said almost exactly what I was going to say. The Chanels I own are reissues for the reasons you state.

I can’t get into the Chanel classic bags. I had a 2.55 in caviar leather, khaki green color. I had never seen that color before. I bought it about 14 years ago in Arizona. I carried it once time only. It just could not hold the things I like to carry. So I sold it on Ebay for a nice little sum. I like a nice big east/west bag!

Ahh I love that khaki green color! But I understand the need for a larger bag, for sure πŸ™‚

Hi Katherine, could you tell me the style and height of your louboutins in the photos? I feel like they look taller than the ones your shared previously πŸ™‚

    thanks!

Hi Cherry! They’re just the classic 100MM Decolletes – not sure why they look taller here, maybe I’m getting shorter!

at first i purchased the size 224 in grey while vacationing in london. a few days later i checked out another chanel store in london and they had the larger 225 in black so i exhanged it. maybe i should have kept both :X
either way i love my black reissue bag! its more badass looking than the classic flap.

    congrats on your pregnancy!

I assume you mean $4000 vs. $400 for the reissue? Otherwise I need to go find one ASAP – what a deal! πŸ™‚

    Hi Kat,

First of all, I love your blog πŸ™‚ And secondly congratulations to you and Mr. Feather on your upcoming bundle of joy!

Now onto this cutie purse πŸ˜› What made you decide to choose the 224 over the 225? It seems that 224 doesn’t get that much love lol, so I’m pleasantly surprised see this post about it! Did you ever show modelling shots of you with your grey reissue 226? before? Because I’d love to see how that’d look crossbody too. Thanks!

I no longer have my gray one…I think it was a 227 actually, it’s now with a friend who loves it πŸ™‚ I chose the 224 because it was easier crossbody, stuck out a little bit less and it’s so cute!

This size is cute and perfect for as you said it, travel. I hardly use my 227, it’s huge and the fact that it is in patent leather does not help. Great review πŸ™‚

This post has convinced me to add this bag to my collection. I called Chanel in Dallas and Neimans and both said that they no longer carry the 224 in their classic line. Do you know where I can find one?

The 224 comes out in seasonal colours, I don’t think they bring it out in the classic line any more. It’s my favourite bag actually, very easy to use, cool & discreet.

Hi Katherine, great post on the 224! I love this bag. I also wanted to know what your chanel collection looks like. I just bought my first chanel- a lambskin jumbo, and I was wondering if you have any lambskin pieces in your collection.

A lambskin jumbo sounds amazing and what a wonderful classic. I did have a lambskin flap but don’t anymore…it’s the most luxurious leather though and more durable than some think.
