The Watch

What watch do you all wear? If any at all? I used to wear one almost every day, but haven’t for awhile now. I started bringing them again towards the end of my pregnancy (watching the time tick every so slowly, day by day), but now I have to take it off every time I hold the baby, so it’s been stashed away.

Even though I love jewelry, I’m not really someone who goes gaga over watches. For some reason this IWC really stood out to me. I kind of think it’s the perfect timepiece, especially for someone looking to buy one that they can use for multiple occasions/settings – it’s elegant yet sporty. The only drawback would be the crocodile strap, which means that it might be uncomfortable during the summer, when you sweat.

Then again, if I had to recommend to someone just one classic watch with staying power, I think I’d still go with either a Rolex Datejust in the 28cm or 31cm size, or a Cartier Ballon Bleu/Tank/Panthere. All beautiful designs that you can keep forever.

I’d love to hear both what watch you wear (if any), and what your dream timepiece is. I need some inspiration!

    Hi Katherine,
Grab the shoes — they are great and the color goes with nearly everything!

I’ve gotten so used to my (ugly!) Garmin tracker that I rarely wear my watches either, but I still love them. For a forever watch I’d go with the Cartier classic tank (I prefer it to the Française). Mine is the steel bracelet style which works in every season but you can’t go wrong with any combination — yellow or white gold w/croc or all metal, as all look great with jewelry.

I wear my Cartier tank all the time, even when I’m working from home, which is often. It’s such an understated piece that it goes with everything!

    Hi Katherine,

I wear a Cartier tank and Francaise style for dressier times. I like my Hermes Double Tour in barenia for sporty wear. I have had a Cartier Santos for over 30 years, but hardly wear it. The steel band is uncomfortable on my arm. I should probably sell it, but I still like the way it looks!

Christine. Let me know if you are interested in selling your Santos. I am on the hunt for one. 🙂

This IWC watch is beautiful! I love Jaeger le Coultre watches, and have two – a leather strap quartz movement and a steel and diamond mechanical movement (which is a bigger investment to be honest). I love the craftsmanship of Jaeger and I like watches with numbers and not roman numerals (which rules out most Cartier styles as much as I love them). I also wear a rubber Michele watch my daughter picked out for me.

    Hi Katherine,

I wear a Tank Louis Cartier in white gold with a black alligator strap. I love the design. The only draw back is the need to replace the strap every few years. That’s a good excuse to get a second watch, maybe the Francaise in steel.

The fantasy watch might be the Jaeger Le-Coultre that Queen Elizabeth II wore to her coronation. The watch was lost, which is very unusual for the royals, but the company made a second one, in white gold, for her diamond jubilee.

    Katherine,
Beautiful IWC watch and good price point. The datejust is a great wardrobe staple and I love that there are many variations in the dials. My daily watch is a Swatch skin (“Ghost”) which is quite sturdy and worry-free to wear. They are feather weight, easy to clean, and Swatch changes your batteries for free. My dress watch is a Cartier Tank solo w/ alligator strap – I know that tanks are a popular pick (especially with your readers haha) but I love it nonetheless. You touched on this subject of being too “basic” with a previous post 🙂 Recently I started learning about different watchmakers, and one that caught my eye was FP Journe. Eye catching and elegant designs!

    Hi Katherine!
First I want to congratulate you on your new baby arrival!
I am another Cartier Tank Louis Cartier lover with an Alligator strap! I do not wear it anymore though I keep for sentimental reasons. It is such a classic. I had other Cartier watches. I parted with them after my husband bought me a Rolex (my favorite❤️).
I also want to comment that I occasionally read your older posts to educate myself about lifestyle, books & reviews (bags, shoes, etc..) They are current as if you posted today!

I wear my vintage 35mm Rolex most of the time but a newer purchase that I just love is the Maurice Lecroix diamond moonphase watch – mother of pearl guilloche dial. It is stunning! Current band on it is a black crocodile and it is not hot at all in the summer. Tres elegante!

I have a fondness for watches! I am not a watch connoisseur who studies the intricacies of complications, I go for the aesthetic *oops* My current love is a Patek Philippe Nautilus – stainless steel strap with a blue face. My other love is my Franck Muller Curvex. I love the look of Richard Mille watches as well but the price point is stratospheric. My watch taste changes with time. In the past, I was all about Cartier watches but now, they do nothing for me. One watch which I love but have not been able to obtain is Roger Dubuis Follow Me. It was a limited release but the design is unique and I somehow love it!

I love a beautiful watch but I’m a creature of habit and wear my Cartier Santos Demoiselle every day…for the last 11 years! I would love to branch out and purchase one with a leather band so this is definitely one I’d like to check out. I hope you are doing well with baby #2!

    Hi Katherine,

Recently made a foray into watches as well. I wear a lot of my Hermes watches for casual day time (Cape Cod, H Hour and Medor). And I enjoy my Omega Speedmaster, Rolex Oyster and Audemars Piguet for work and dressier occasions–I just love all the history and stories behind all three. I’m currently eyeing a leather band watch like the Cartier Tank (or Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso) or an IWC Portuguese (although fear it might be a bit big!). Looking forward to see what you end up with!

I love my Cartier Tank Francaise and have worn it almost every day for over 15 years. What I don’t love is the very expensive “servicing” that the watch has required during my ownership of it at over $500 a pop. (Three times!) (Cartier gives you the line about how watches are like cars and they need servicing. Give me a break! My husband’s $30 Timex lasted just over 10 years and never needed servicing. ) But darn those people at Cartier – I still love my watch!

Hi Katherine, IWC is a very good choice ! I used to work for Jaeger Le Coultre, also an excellent brand. There is no best brand of watches. In terms of value conservation, Rolex and Patek Philippe are the best ones.

I don’t have the income to spend thousands on watches. I do have one good watch – an Ebel Beluga that I’ve had for about 14 years. I had to have it serviced about 2 years ago, which cost me $400, but I got back a watch that is basically brand new. Didn’t make sense not to spend the money and have the watch sitting in a drawer! The diamonds on it are lovely…and it now works like a charm!

I wear a steel iwatch every day and can’t se myself going back to an ordinary watch in the near future. I’m not interested in expensive watches, I like mine to be practical, waterproof and nice looking. I have a couple of “nice” pieces but don’t use them. I have a Hermès Kelly watch that I use on my bag as a charm and a DoG that I use the same way. So a good watch is not my thing but let’s talk about bags…

    Hello Katherine,
I agree that a Rolex watch is a good buy that will lasts forever. My favorite Rolex would be the Cosmograph Daytona in steel with white dials.

My husband recently surprised me with an IWC as a “thank you for being an amazing mom” gift and I love it. In my opinion, my IWC is less flashy and doesn’t bring me unwanted attention. When someone does recognize my watch, its a great conversation starter.

While IWC is my favorite timepiece company, I also love the simple look of the Rolex Daytona. I’m petite but I love the way this oversized watch looks on me. The metal band is also nice and durable when my little one is trying to teethe on the strap. ?

I wear a Rolex Datejust 31 in stainless steel (with a domed bezel) on weekends and when running around. It’s universal and timeless, and can take a beating. With a small child, I’ve been wearing it more and more often now. The only shortcoming is that the steel bracelet interferes with typing on a keyboard at work. While at the office or at a more formal occasion I wear a 33 mm Patek Calatrava (white gold/navy strap) or a small JLC Duetto in rose gold (also on a strap). Both of these are comfortable and elegant, don’t interfere with typing/computer work, and let me indulge in my need for change. I mix up the color of the strap by season (navy, turquoise, burgundy, etc.).

If I were to add another watch to my collection right now it would have to be the Patek Ladies Nautilus (automatic/steel). I think my watch collection is probably on the excessive side, but other than the occasional set of pearls or stud earrings, it’s the only item of jewelry I wear on a daily basis.

Does anyone here have a Chanel? I know watch fanatics look down on fashion watches, but I can’t keep my mind off a Chanel J12 in the newly brought out XS size!

I also have/love the cartier tank francaise – mine is stainless steel. Every now and then I wonder if I should have gotten the two-tone version instead, but I usually conclude that the silver tone is best as it can look as good with a casual/understated outfit as with a dressed up outfit. I do like the look of the datejust but now living in a casual west coast city I think it can come off as “too much” in some of my circles 😐
