Today’s post is short (and perhaps a little off topic given what I normally go on about). But I recently read this Rolling Stone article, about how traditional air conditioning is so bad for our planet, and something really stuck with me. Before I go further please note that I truly am not trying to be “holier than thou” about being green – I could be a lot better about SO many things, environmental wise, and also I have an entire sheaf of comments and emails from over the years, via various scolds about how I’m doing XYZ wrong. And like I said…there is a lot that I’m sure I’m doing wrong. But I want to try to be better!

So. Onto fans. We use AC in the summer. Not too much (I did grow up in a Chinese immigrant household) though still some. But after reading this article I thought I would try to go without it as much as possible, and went ahead and bought three of these fans from Target. And let me just say: they are GREAT. We had a really hot day this weekend, the hottest of the year so far (around 95) and I still managed to keep the AC off by just using these fans. And it was fine! Not that nice super cold blast you get from the AC, but it was a nice breeze and I wasn’t bothered or sweaty so I considered it a win.

So really, that’s my post for today. A short testament to fans. If you’re an AC addict, maybe you can try one, or a few. You might be surprised by how much you like it, and you’ll save energy, and it’s better for the Earth. Win win win.

Have a wonderful week!

Small changes! I too grew up in a Chinese immigrant household, and combined with my very loud and subpar (it just periodically blows gusts of air out?) Brooklyn central air, I find fans work most of the time! I feel like tower fans also blow out colder air …and definitely are more effective than my aesthetically pleasing metal tabletop, sadly.

Thank you for sharing! Just ordered a few for my (Chinese American!) parents who are currently getting bids for AC in their SF home which would probably only be used twice a year!!
