Hello! We just got back from Maui late last night. I’m always sad to leave Hawaii, and always play out various Office Space related fantasies in my head during the car ride back to the airport. It was a wonderful week to spend with my family and such a relaxing time. I can’t wait to share some photos with you! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday (those who are celebrating!).

Ann Taylor pants (a whopping 40% off with the code MONDAY here)
Van Cleef & Arpels necklaces (similar here)
Chanel bag (my FAVORITE bowler style here)
Louboutin pumps

Whenever I wear a really plain outfit (which is most of the time, der) I try and add some jewelry. One of my favorite things to do is layering necklaces. A trick that I like to do is instead of wearing the necklaces separately, I instead like to connect the necklaces I’m layering together, and then loop them around my neck, so I can adjust the length as needed. For the two I’m wearing here, the black necklace was hanging lower and the gold was hanging higher than I’d like so I just connected them and gently pulled down, and voila!

Happy Monday and if you’re probably going to be doing some shopping like I am (though I kind of detest the term “Cyber Monday”), Net-A-Porter and Neiman Marcus have some fabulous deals going on. That’s definitely where I’m going to be spending my time!

Today’s interview is with the lovely and very accomplished JL, someone who I think you will really enjoy meeting. JL is a successful attorney who has been able to find the flexibility in maintaining a work/life balance – something I definitely wanted to hear more about. She’s also a fascinating woman with a variety of passions – which include screenwriting and monkeys! And last but not least, she of course has a fabulous wardrobe. Enjoy meeting JL!

Who are you? What do you do, and where do you live?

Hi! I’m JL and I currently live on the West Coast, though I’m a Chicagoan at heart. I’m an attorney specializing in employment law and I currently work from home part-time which I juggle with taking care of my 4.5 year old twin girls. Before having twins, I was a full-time attorney in private practice for over ten years with a busy litigation and counseling practice. I’m very fortunate to be able to continue pursuing my career in a more flexible way while my children are young.

You went to some great universities (Georgetown and Stanford) for your undergraduate degree and law school. What would be your advice for others who are just entering the field of law? Do you think its more competitive/difficult today that it was earlier?

Thanks for the compliments! To answer your second question first, I think the practice of law is much more competitive and difficult today than it was when I started. I started practicing in 1998 and, although it sounds archaic now, we communicated with clients and opposing counsel by fax and letters. Yes, we actually sent letters in the mail! Now communications are by email and cell phone and attorneys find themselves being required to be available and accessible 24/7. Never really being able to shut down for the day can definitely take its toll and the issue of work/life balance is what I struggled with the most when I was practicing full-time. The economy has also impacted law firms and there is constant pressure to keep costs down as much as possible. Attorneys today need to be able to hit the ground running and I don’t know that there is as much time and opportunity for on-the-job training like I received as a junior attorney. It also used to be that you would put in your dues, make partner, and be able to ease off a little. That is no longer true. The legal market is so competitive today that even partners are working non-stop and under constant pressure to bring in new business. Continue reading »

This weekend I had a nice mini break with my husband – we did a trip to Healdsburg to check it out and to try the restaurant Cyrus before it closes in October. I have a post along for that, but for now this is what I wore on the car ride up – it was hot! You can see that I was in a hurry and was rooting in my bag for something right before this photo was taken. I always leave my Chanel flaps open out of laziness but it probably isn’t good for the bags.

Today’s interview is with the lovely and very charming and accomplished T. T instantly won me over when she described herself to me as a “homebody who loves cats”. How cool of a description is that? As someone whose idea of a good time involves my couch, wine, giant Twix bars and Veronica Mars, T’s words definitely spoke to me as a secret introvert.

T is accomplished (she’s a dentist!), loves cats, and has fabulous style and a closet to match. Enjoy meeting her!

Who are you? What do you do, and where do you live?

Hi! My name is T. I am a dentist. Currently, I live in the southeast United States with my husband, four beloved cats, and one stray cat who comes to our house daily to eat and nap on our front porch. Haha. Continue reading »
