Interview with Fleurette

I am very happy to bring you all today’s interview – with the lovely and eloquent Fleurette from the beautifully done blog, Dead Fleurette. Fleurette is one of my favorite bloggers and she has the type of well thought out entries and writing that makes you revisit them again and again, like an old friend. She thinks about her wardrobe carefully but is never overdone, has style and grace, and also a touch of quirky humor. All in all, she is a must read and I am sure you all will enjoy meeting her today. So, let’s begin!

The lovely and stylish Fleurette

First things first – what do you do? Where do you live…and who are you?

Wow, I’m on the first question and you’re already asking me the great existential question. Yes, who am I? I don’t know, I feel so lost in this big and unpredictable space. Okay, no, seriously, I’m a 20 year old girl, living in Oslo, Norway. With fear of sounding like a jack of all trades, I happen to be a student, pianist, entrepreneur, and writer. I also work as a substitute teacher in secondary school and piano tutor. Besides, I run a blog called Dead Fleurette.

Small shot of her closet

Tell me a little bit about your “uniform.” How did you come to that is your standard day outfit? What were some of your previous “uniforms?”

My uniform has remained the same for many years now – with alterations. My uniform is something I automatically and naturally put on, and I always feel comfortable in it. Striped tops have always been part of my uniforms, regardless of my style influences at the time.

Well worn and loved boots

What are your favorite items in your closet?

Every item in my closet is a cherished favorite. Or, at least that’s what I want to attain with a “perfect wardrobe”.

Now I know you are a minimalist – but you must indulge me and let me know some of your dream items! What would you buy tomorrow if money weren’t an issue?

Haha, I wouldn’t say that i’m a minimalist. At first, I was an aspiring minimalist, but I’ve finally found a good balance and now I’m just being inspired by the minimalist lifestyle. I don’t want to be an extremist. I believe that a peaceful mind is by virtue of a balanced and healthy lifestyle, and being an extremist isn’t something I would define as healthy. Anyway, to answer your question, I am having some serious cravings for the Sofia Coppola x Louis Vuitton bag. So, if money weren’t an issue, I’d drop five grands on said bag in a heartbeat. I love how casual and understated the design is, yet incredibly luxurious.

Wearing an Isabel Marant jacket

What did you purchase that you thought was going to be so great/such a classic that you regret now? What about an item that has been surprisingly versatile?

I think it must be those sought-after iconic jackets from Isabel Marant. Ultimately, I figured out that they didn’t work out for my style or the climate in Norway. Quite simply, I didn’t feel comfortable wearing fitted, feminine jackets, and I learned through trial and error that certain pieces can only be admired from afar. In spite of this, I’m still dreaming of owning a black jacket from Chanel – but it has to be a bit masculine in order to please the tomboy-ish gamine-in-me.

Layering with a jacket

One of my favorite photos of Emmanuelle Alt (and her adorable daughter!)

Name some people whose style you adore but who aren’t minimalist at all. And then tell me…who are your minimalist icons?

I don’t really have any style icons, but I love Sofia Coppola’s understated elegance and strong sense of style. I could probably wear every outfit of hers. I also admire Emmanuelle Alt for her marvelous taste, sharp eye for cut, color and fit, deep appreciation for quality, and the fact that she dresses her body and proportions. We should all derive inspiration from the way she picks out her clothes.

What is your fashion pet peeve? I’m not going to let you say “to each their own.” You must give me your personal peeve 🙂

Haha, I have tons of fashion pet peeves, but I can’t come up with any examples, oddly enough. Okay.. hmmm.. this one is definitely classic: Socks in sandals. Oh my!

Fleurette and one of my favorite outfits

If you could share any of the wisdom you’ve gained over time in curating the perfect closet/style with readers – what would it be? And how about your advice on life?

Don’t settle for the second best and never underestimate good quality and fit. As for advice on life, not that I feel like I’m experienced enough to give any advice on life, I’d like to quote Sylvia Plath: If you expect nothing from somebody you are never disappointed”. Absolutely spot on!

And my favorite photo of Fleurette!

And finally…please tell me something surprising about yourself 🙂

Well.. I’m such an oxymoron, for instance I’m spontaneous but I love organizing and planning. I was born on Friday 13th with a tooth. YES, with a tooth, I tell you! So I was already a freak as a baby. And I used to play the accordion, which i stopped playing a couple of months ago, and I was actually pretty rad at playing it. I tended to have a whole wall covered with medals and diplomas from all the national accordion championship and competitions in which I participated. Haha!

Isn’t she fabulous? While putting together this entry I was struck with the sudden urge to throw out a bunch of my closet and start up all over again with only my favorite pieces. Fleurette is such an inspiration to wear, love, and select our clothes with care and comfort. I hope you all enjoyed meeting her, and thank you again Fleurette for your time and beautiful photographs. For more of her, please check out Dead Fleurette.

She sounds absolutely fantastic! I really wish I had enough will power (or logic in this case) to purchase only items that I will love for many many years to come – instead of splurging on a new top …because it was 50% off. She really does give the urge to empty out my closet and start from scratch…haha.

    Cheers from Montreal,

I have always adored her crisp, clean looks and dedication to her uniform. She is so specific about her pieces, and I agree, she never settles for second best. Amazing pick for an interview! She really helped me with building my closet.

What a great interview!! I've always been curious about Fleurette!! And I'm still fascinated with her – I also considered her a minimalist but her perspective on the subject is so different!

Thanks again for a fun one! :o)

For someone so young, she writes with great insight and wisdom. Such a beautifully written blog which puts mine to shame. As for Isabel Marant jackets, I think they suit her so well!
