Weekend Update

Sale PSA: An adorable playsuit from Zimmermann, now $292 (thanks J for the rec! I love this and think it’s a perfect choice for a wedding, etc), a great notch bootie from Vince, now 25% off (I think this is an excellent design for making legs look longer), a button front tank dress from Madewell, now 33% off, and a great midi dress from Theory (I’ve recommended this before, I have it, love it, and now it’s even cheaper!!) now just $57

Also: just realized Madewell is having a good sale, for up to 30% off everything, with code YOUCHOOSE, and plus lots of stuff is already on sale on top! I’ve been eyeing tons of items, including these lace up boots (whyyyy are they all sold out), this crop t-shirt, these leopard mules (under $62 with code!), and this leopard slip dress. They seriously have so many great things right now!

1. Sharing a favorite new pair of boots – these excellent Everlane Glove boots, $155.

I have a review of these I want to do soon but I love them so much I wanted to share now. Because they are actually selling out really fast! I know this because after I received the toffee and realized how great they are I’ve been after the black, which is almost completely sold out at Everlane And then saw they are actually also on Nordstrom, in the black and toffee color. But they are sold out there too! So. Try these! They are affordable and the perfect width and really flattering.

By the way – if you do want to try out Everlane or just want one item check out Nordstrom, as they are having a “Pop In” with a lot of the classic pieces and also have free shipping and returns.

2. Sharing this little article, about Melania Trump causing a small riot at a UN school. I like articles about hysteria at ritzy schools (see here).

3. I enjoyed this article via The NY Times, about the staid dining scene in Napa. We were recently in Napa for a wedding and since my husband and I rarely get these freebie overnights without kids we were debating whether to do a fancy meal like this. Which we ordinarily would have done, even before kids. But this time we were kind of like…what’s the point? We’ve seen it before and it’s a ton of time to dedicate to a single meal. We took a walk instead, ate burgers and chili cheese fries at Taylor’s Refresher (Gott’s) and it was great. And like, 2% of the price.

4. I want to know your thoughts on this piece, via The Guardian, from a woman whose husband has finally (?) stopped cheating on her after 35 years. My God! Of course the book side of myself is like…she’s got to write a book. Or maybe she already has and in which case this is great advertising.

5. This week, I read Mrs. Kimble, by Jennifer Haigh.

I’ve been on a Jennifer Haigh kick lately. Seriously, she’s really fantastic! The kind of writer that makes one (aka me) envious. And wow this was really good. I might even like it more than I did the other Haigh I read, Heat & Light (which I recommended earlier). The book follows three women, who marry the same man (hence the name), though not at the same time. But remember what I said before, in my post on publishing, about not judging a book by its cover? Not that this is a bad cover, but one might think this is a kind of “chick lit” (hate that term but can’t think of a better one right now) novel, with a happy ending but I have to warn you it is not. It’s beautifully, expertly written, super engaging, but isn’t necessarily “feel good” (not that it’s feel bad! Compared to something like, A Little Life). Anyway, if you like contemporary fiction, and don’t mind a not-super-happy tone, I’d recommend Mrs. Kimble.

Kat i love how you review Everlane pieces. it’s one of my fave retailers for high quality items that have a clean, modern yet classic aesthetic and that I don’t worry about when the kids have sticky fingers or when they bury their spaghetti sauce covered face in my shoulder because they are feeling shy. Also how AMAZING Everlane is now at Nordstroms!!! that’s HUGE!!

RE #3, I’m totally the same! In my late 20s and early 30s, it was all about the fancy meals and Michelin stars. Last trip to Napa, we ate at the Rutherford Grill. If you haven’t had it before, they have the BEST French dip sandwich made from thin sliced prime rib. Delicious, and also to be found at sister restaurants the Los Altos Grill and Hillstone up in the city (for after those trips to the Exploratorium!)

I read the Guardian article about the woman who remained married to a man who cheated on her for 35 years. I was stunned. My initial reaction was that she didn’t value herself much if she was so willing to tolerate such demeaning treatment. While I still think that, I also realized that she had what, to her, were valid reasons for her decision and, in the end, she still feels that she did the right thing. So, maybe she did make the best decision for her and her family. We make our choices, then our choices make us. I do wonder if she’s found peace….

…the chi-chi school drama stuff gives me giggles of derision every time I read it. I find it HILARIOUS that Nikki Haley sent her kids to a UN-affiliated school, what with her strident work cutting the UN at the legs every which way she could. There really is no self-awareness in that one.
That said, having gone through competitive public and private schooling experiences, I’ve decided it’s good public schools all the way for my kiddos 🙂

Oh wow the preschool article was so good! A close friend sends her kids to one of the fancy LA preschools and always has the best stories to share.
