Weekend Update

Sale PSA: Zella 7/8 leggings with pockets (why have pockets not existed before? I ignored Zella for the anniversary sale since I have enough leggings but now I need a pair), now under $40, a side slit midi dress from Vince, now $123, an Eileen Fisher crepe/linen shift dress, now $166, and a beautiful embroidered beach tunic from J.Crew, now 40% off (I have this and it’s really love and a decent length too)

1. Today sharing this dress, from Tory Burch.

So they say this is a cover up but I don’t really consider it one? I feel like this happens a lot with Tory Burch. I actually love a lot of Tory Burch prints but don’t actually own a lot of her items yet – I like this one, very feminine with a modern touch and I’d actually probably wear this dress on the shoulders, so I could wear a bra.

2. Wow to this piece, via The Cut, about the horrible downfall (and potential future redemption) of a Harvard professor. This man! His poor family!

3. An interesting piece I’d love to hear your opinions on, via The NY Times, about how all the skincare products we use could be making our skin worse. What do you think?

4. A beautiful and moving piece – The Crane Wife, via The Paris Review.

5. This week I read Disappearing Earth, by Julia Phillips.

This is a really beautiful book. A murder mystery, set in the Kamchatka region of Russia, which I really knew nothing about until I started reading. I will say that this is not a traditional “thriller” – each chapter focuses on a different set of characters, some only nominally related to the missing. The main star of the book actually is the Kamchatka region itself – which I loved reading about. If you like mysteries, but “quieter” ones, beautiful writing, and learning about a new place, I recommend Disappearing Earth.

I read part of that article about the professor…had to stop! I may get back to it, but couldn’t continue! How could he allow that situation to go that far? It boggles the mind!

The CUT article is horrible. It’s so disheartening how people will take advantage of others and sets women/trans/etc back. When I read articles like this it makes me distrust everyone especially women. To throw around pregnancy claims, rape, harassment claims so causally is horrible. Yet it happens and makes it hard to believe others. It only takes one false claim to bring down hundreds of other true ones.

Wow indeed to the Cut article. It reminds me of that terrible Keanu Reeve movie, Knock Knock, where the two women were up to no good. Just like the movie, it sucks that the professor’s ex-wife lost her heirloom pieces. But at least she was smart enough to sense trouble early on and move the title of the house completely to her.

The Crane Wife and the Japanese story reference was a moving read. I would tell the author that the guy may look Chris Hemsworth dreamy but he is a total douche and his mom would have been a nightmare of an in-law. She deserves better. Good for her to call it off before falling deeper into the rabbit hole.

Something to tell daughters to avoid in qualities of a relationship and the importance of self-worth.
