Weekend Update

Sale PSA: A pretty swim coverup from Rebecca Roller Rabbit, now $67, a really gorgeous sequin minidress from Saloni for $235 (a great NYE option), and pretty slingback snake sandals from By Far, now $127

Also, because I was asked for some skincare recommendations, here are some favorites from the Nordstrom sale: Paula’s Choice 2% Liquid Exfoliant (I use this every night), Mario Badescu Enzyme Cleansing Gel, and I also just ordered Neulash to try out. Also on the makeup side: this great Becca rose glow kit!

On the non Nordstrom sale side, this Drunk Elephant cream is my favorite right now.

1. Today I’m recommending an item that I love that recently came back in stock: this Everlane baseball cap.

Kind of a “boring” rec I know but really – this hat is awesome. It’s super light and adjustable and the brim is large enough and just super chic and simple. I bought the black last year and actually was asked multiple times where I got it, so this year I added the olive. The perfect hat to keep in a tote, etc, in case you’re somewhere with sun.

2. Sharing this via Bloomberg, about the decimating financial impact of getting divorced after the age of 50. Now that I have kids and a mortgage payment and college to pay for and all of that, I can see this.

3. An interesting piece, via The LA Times, about the downfall of Forever 21. Did you know they were exploring bankruptcy? I didn’t! But I haven’t shopped there in years.

4. An old article a friend sent me via The NY Times, The Allure of the Tool Belt, because I’m doing some work on my house right now. I laughed at the part about shopping for marble together.

5. This week I’m recommending an old favorite – The Long and Faraway Gone, by Lou Berney.

I had thought I’d already recommended this book, but then Montana in this post posted that she was re-reading it, in the comments, and I realized I had never shared it. This is a great detective/mystery book, set mostly in Oklahoma City, an area with which I’m entirely unfamiliar. The book features multiple stories that don’t intersect but still “feel” like they are interconnected. And Berney is a really beautiful, subtle writer. If you like mysteries, and a “quieter” thriller (but not that quiet! There’s crime! And violence!) with great writing, I recommend The Long and Faraway Gone.

Thanks for recommending Lou Berney’s The Long and Faraway Gone. I loved the book and just binge read all his other books! I hope he writes another book soon.
