Weekend Update

1. Sharing a very chic mini dress/cover up that I’ve been eyeing, from Staud.

It’s cool right? I really like it! It’s heavy linen and has pockets! And just seems like such an easy throw on and go piece/pool cover up. Also comes in a brown version.

2. Sharing this piece via The Atlantic, What You Lose When You Gain A Spouse. One of those case against marriage pieces. What do you think? Does it matter that the author doesn’t have kids? I’ve read some debate about this.

3. A fun piece via The NY Times, about the $50 dress that conquered Britain. I haven’t seen this dress! But I haven’t shopped at Zara for a while, after a string of misses.

4. My favorite article sharing this week: this fantastic piece about a class riot in Brooklyn’s most exclusive preschool. YES.

5. This week, I’m reading Three Women, by Lisa Taddeo.

This is a non-fiction book, which follows the sex lives of three women over a long period of time – I can’t really describe it more detail, except that it’s one of those non-fiction books that read like fiction, that feel like you’re right there with the women, living their lives, thinking their thoughts. The writing is gorgeous and thought provoking. I highly recommend Three Women.

The madness in the preschool story absolutely made my day… couldn’t decide if it was comedy or tragedy. It was hard to relate to those affected… even the one teacher didn’t evoke sympathy when her tactics became clear. Still, very entertaining and fascinating. My kids preschool program was chosen simply in proximity to home and how soon i could get to her in cases of emergency. But i did literally buy a house in a top rated school district for her elementary needs so there… first world problems.

Three Women sounds promising! I look forward to your book recommendations.

I just finished Runaway and am going through A Manual For Cleaning Women. The former was almost meditative, and i feel like i am being propelled through the latter by the nonstop brisk humorous observations. Thoroughly enjoying both.

The Brooklyn preschool thing is so bad it’s good. Glad you spotted this story too – saw it earlier in the week. Outrageous all around. Bottom line…to me it’s sounds like the hiring committee didn’t really know what they wanted in a new director, or at least not how to interview for one. That said, there is often zero correlation between how a candidate does in an interview and how they do once they are on the job. Yowza.

The article about the preschool, IMO, was very telling about how some of today’s children are being raised. I think children are much more tuned in to the adults around them than many adults realize. Is it any real surprise that there are so many children bullying others today, when there are so many adults behaving, with perhaps a little more polished facade, in much the same way?

In the past 2 weeks, I finished the 3 books/series of crazy rich asians. Coming from Malaysia, and having lived in Singapore for 3 years, that book is very much alive. It’s funny when a book written in English has Hokkien and Cantonese words that you actually understand. Almost as if, you understood the secret language.
My next book is the four tendencies by Gretchen Rubin. Also, just ordered three women from Amazon with $5 off for prime day 😉

Thanks for the recommendations. Love your blog!
