Weekend Update

1. Just ordered – this linen blend Nordstrom dress to try out, for under $60.

I know I just talked about natural fabrics but this is kind of one of those blends that confuse me – 50% linen 50% viscose, do I do it? I finally decided that if it’s an item that I’ll use a lot, I try – and this is a dress I think I’ll use a lot, bra friendly (hopefully) and a cool design and decent length.

2. I’d love to know what you all think of this fascinating think piece on Ivanka Trump, via the Atlantic. Do you think her and Jared can return to NY afterwards and re-enter society as if nothing happened? New Yorkers, let me know!

3. Next, I want to know your thoughts on this piece, via The NY Times, about whether the Birkin can survive the resale market. My answer….yes, it has survived the Kardashians and a lot worse.

4. Loved and laughed when I saw this video via SNL, Fashion Coward.

5. This week (on my flight home from Toronto, hi Canadians!) I read Normal People, by Sally Rooney.

So this book is getting a lot of acclaim (unless you read the Amazon reviews, and honestly I never read Amazon reviews for literary fiction) and as a fellow author and jealous creature I was predisposed to dislike Rooney, who has TWO acclaimed books and was born in the highly disturbing year of 1991 (!!) . The book was also described as kind of a “millennial love story” which honestly doesn’t sound like something I’d be into, but I gave it a try anyway and unfortunately (but mostly fortunately) in my opinion it was worth all of its hype. The book is about a couple and their getting together, breaking up, getting together, breaking up, during high school/college – believe me, not the sort of thing I usually go for but I loved it and the novel in my opinion is timeless and will speak to anyone who was ever in love at a young age. Beautiful, thoughtful, and a page turner -I highly recommend Normal People.

I hear you on the Amazon reviews. Your Family Trust book reviews there have been unkind! Plus your book is selling for $8?! 68% off. Wth.

You are so kind but no authors I know read their Amazon!! Probably for this reason. I only mentioned what I did for Normal People because I was surprised to see it with 3 stars but I think generally literary fiction gets worse reviews on consumer sites. Also not going into the nitty gritty but those $8 prices aren’t actually Amazon, they are third party sellers that are often selling used as new and it’s a huge headache across the board actually for publishers. Just a little background/industry info!

    Hi Kathy!

I am an avid reader of your blog… There’s no other authors which quench my thirst to read about fashion, you do it the practical/realistic way, the best.

    One question and personal remark:
I perused the blog looking on tips for evening wear / black tie/white tie. I totally agree with what you said until now, but what about a whole practical outfit post?
For example how you pair a specific dress with shoes or hairdo/makeup.

I would love to share my experience of me as a casual dresser, going to balls. (interesting how my friends and I all wore gown too large but it works out fine as long as you chose the right shape for you!).

    Happy Easter and Best greetings,

    Hi Kat,

Are you still conducting interviews for your blog? I miss them! I would love for you to interview the Texan cutie Fenche Shen of Instagram’s fenche310. I recently discovered her. She founded a coffee distribution company in 2011 and her reveals and fashion are TDF! I don’t think she is or ever will be on “ban island.” I would love to learn more about her: how she founded the her business, advice for entrepreneurs, etc.

    Happy Easter!
