Weekend Update

1. Today I am sharing a very pretty smocked dress, from Tory Burch.

I know I just shared a smocked dress last week but this came back in stock at Net-A-Porter so I was very pleased. I’m afraid it might look a little prarie-ish at my height? I don’t know, I might still try.

Also available at Nordstrom (where it’s being sold as a coverup!).

2. An interesting article, the The NY Times about how the elite are increasingly more unhappy in their jobs. The author of the article, Charles Duhigg, is like me – HBS alum turned author except that he also has a Pulitzer I guess!!

3. A very interesting piece I’d like to hear your thoughts about – Womens Work, via The New Yorker.

4. Thank you to Elle for alerting me to this Vanity Fair update on Theranos. I didn’t think there could be more details but yet there are! I have also been alerted that the HBO documentary is on this weekend. Whose watching?

5. This week, I read Listen to the Marriage, by John Jay Osborn.

This is a very interesting book about yes, a marriage, told entirely from the perspective of a marriage counselor. I was actually on a panel with Osborn, (who wrote The Paper Chase, for all the lawyers), as well as Cathi Hanauer, and they both said a comment that was something like…almost every couple they knew had gone to a counselor. And I thought that was so interesting, because (and I’m sharing here), my husband and I have never gone, though we’ve discussed it. I wanted to read Osborn’s book just to understand the topic further, and I have to say, that after reading it, that both the couple and the role a counselor played in their marriage was entirely realistic, and the book itself was fascinating, though I think it’ll be especially familiar if you’ve been married for a while. If you’re looking for a thoughtful book about marriage, imperfect ones, I highly recommend Listen to the Marriage.

I will definitely be watching the Theranos show tonight on HBO. Can’t wait. The box was simply fascinating. I still can’t understand how she pulled off as much as she did. Unbelievable.

I always look forward to your articles! Regarding the job satisfaction one, I wouldn’t consider myself “elite”, but I did struggle coming out of college and I do think that lowering your expectations leads to greater happiness. The Womens’ Work article has me feeling a little raw. I have a nanny and feel terrible that I don’t spend more time with my kids and terrible that I take up 50 hours per week of her time. If I didn’t work, I would feel terrible about a whole host of other things, so I’m coming to the conclusion that motherhood involves a great deal of guilty feelings no matter what choices you make. Ugh.

I hope it’s on 20/20…I got rid of HBO! Looking now.

Kathy, Inthink that dress would work for you…perhaps with the last tier removed.

LOVED the Megan Stack article – just pre-ordered her book on this topic. My son is in daycare (they call it preschool, but he’s only 22 months so it’s definitely daycare not mandarin lessons), so I have had a different experience with childcare providers but it’s still definitely a complicated dynamic. We pay $3k(!) a month and I’m sure the 2 “teachers” for the 8 kids don’t see most of that.
I am due in a few weeks with baby #2 and we just got a cleaning lady – my husband was adamant for a long time that he didn’t want someone “in his space” (he works mostly from home), but I neither of us have the motivation to do it ourselves. I guess we’ll continue to rely on uber eats for dinners 😐
Last thing! The domestic worker dynamic article reminds me of this book I read a few years ago:

With regards to Theranos, there’s both a HBO documentary (The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley) that I think is due to be released early next week, on March 18 or 19, as well as a ABC 20/20 special on Theranos which will be released tonight. ABC has also been doing a podcast on Elizabeth Holmes/Theranos called “The Dropout”, which I’ve been listening to. I have a basically insatiable appetite for Theranos-related content, so I’ve been following it all, but strictly speaking, I don’t think The Dropout podcast much substantive content that wasn’t already covered in Bad Blood.

…I just looked up Listen to the Marriage on Amazon and it showed other people also bought Family Trust! 🙂

BTW, have you been following the college admissions cheating scandal. Crazy! I wonder if there’s more to come out of it all.

I just finished reading Listen to the marriage. Good read wondering if I should switch career and become a marriage counselor haha. (While most people probably are just thinking whether they should start seeing one)
