Weekend Update

1. Lately I’ve been feeling as if there have been a lot more well priced designer dresses lately. Have you noticed this? A great example is this very pretty one from Iro.

This is very nice, no? I feel like a great New Year’s Eve party sort of dress, that looks comfortable (so important!!). I know based on the latest Versace show that bodycon may be creeping back in but I kind of feel like it’s permanently over for me. I always want comfort now. This Iro dress is gorgeous and is fully lined to boot (though in polyester).

2. An article, via the WSJ, about the faltering Manhattan real estate market. So interesting and if you have any local insight I’d love to hear it!

3. I’m sure most of you read the news about the arrest of Huawei’s CFO, also the daughter of the founder, and what it means for the global economy. Which is fascinating stuff in itself but which makes this article, via SCMP, I was already going to share, about another Huawei founder’s daughter, Annabel Yao and her debut at the Le Bal in Paris, doubly interesting. Are the two sisters (I am pretty sure they are)? How on earth did they allow this piece? What could possibly be the benefit of being so public?

4. I feel like I’ve seen various Instagrammers I follow in this sunflower field, as written about in The NY Times. Right? Haven’t you?

5. This week, I read The Perfect Nanny, by Leila Slimani.

So I had heard about this book when it first came out earlier this year, and was intrigued but ultimately skipped it because of the subject – based on the Krim murders – I just didn’t think I could handle. Last week however, my editor highly, highly recommended it, so I decided to give it a shot. The first few pages (it starts with the murder) are brutal but then afterward I couldn’t put it down. This book is so well written, so engaging..and yes, very disturbing but I’ve thought about it for days after. I can’t say that for many books these days. Especially if you have children and struggle with childcare (who doesn’t)? – I highly recommend The Perfect Nanny

They are half sisters from Ren Zhengfei’s different marriages. And none of them took their father’s last name. The series of events reported were just shocking. I can’t believe you read the book! But now I have to give it a try. I know it’s irrational but when I was thinking about the nanny option I couldn’t help but thinking about the Krim murders. It was just too brutal. Ghee, I don’t know if I have the mental strength to read the book!

For once, I’ve read a book ahead of you (mostly because I think it was out in Europe earlier). Love The Nanny. I don’t have children but the characters resonated. How do you manage to read so many books? I barely get through one a month these days. I am filled with admiration when you have a family as well.

I read The Nanny about a year ago. I did not find any of the characters in any way attractive and the book quite disturbing.

Some of my most comfortable and pretty dresses have been Iro, on sale at NM, though you always need to check what fabric it is. I can’t believe the Annabel Yao piece either. And you’re brave to read The Nanny. Even though my daughter is way past her nanny days. it’s too scary!
