Weekend Update

1. Tops on my really really want wishlist right now: these Prada sandals.

I first saw these, and was like, add to cart now. And then I was like well, maybe I can wait, possibly, until end of season and see if they make it to sale…but wait, almost all sizes sold out? AGH!! So annoying yet not surprising because these are adorable and walkable and the perfect leopard to boot. I’ll be size stalking FOR SURE and snapping up if they reappear in my size.

2. One of those random articles you come across (in my case, searching for info on a random Hermes bag I think) – a feature about a teacher in Singapore who spends her teacher’s bonuses on Hermes bags. What do you think? It’s easy to judge but should we? I also like those little bits at the bottom from various Hermes fans and how they use the bags.

3. A great piece by the always on point Vanessa Friedman, about Marc Jacobs and The End of Fashion. What do we think? I took a look at the runway photos and thought the clothes looked very pretty, but I wouldn’t wear any of them, but I’m not Marc’s target market. I saw a quote where he said that there’s plenty of people dressing women going to Starbucks and he isn’t one of them. He’s right –  I am well served!

4. Have you been following the disappearance of Fan Bingbing? This is fascinating and somewhat disturbing. I feel so nervous about how this is all going to turn out.

5. This week I finished How To Get Rich In Rising Asia, by Mohsin Hamid.

The first time I read Mohsin Hamid was late last year, when I read his book Exit West (which I loved) – I came across this in a bookshop and saw his name decided to take it home. And honestly…this is one of those books that’s just stayed with me, that I had to stay up late to finish, that made me read the last page multiple times. Written as a self help book, about how you, (yes, you) are to get “filthy rich” in an unnamed country in Asia but which seems to be Pakistan, this was such an engrossing read. If you liked Exit West, if you want to read about politics and identity and wealth and love all in a slightly wry, but also very serious package… I can’t recommend How To Get Filthy Rich In Rising Asia enough – it is one of my favorites of the year.

I just read What We Were Promised and loved it – you may enjoy as well. Very short read. I thought it was going to be about the real taitais of Shanghai, but it was surprisingly a much more nuanced family story. I think Amazon actually recommended this to me after I pre-ordered your book…

I loved the Hermes bag article. If a professional likes to spend her bonus on hermes bags, why not? Why shouldn’t she? I think as far as addictions go that’s quite a healthy one. I posted an article on the brand on my blog, not sure if allowed to say that, but is a good article and you may be interested.

I totally understand spennding a bonus on an Hermes bag! I try to purchase earrings with every bonus! I’m eyeballing some hoops by Diane Kordas at Saks online. They are on sale and insanely beautiful! I have a box Kelly 32cm . I very rarely use it because I’m afraid to mess it up!

Same re: box kelly! Wish I had done more research on leathers before buying it – I am always to scared to wear it 🙁

Ah! I love that book, we read it for a South Asian lit class in undergrad. We also read Cracking India, which I would recommend!! I also like Midnight’s Children, which is somewhat long but really magical.

I really enjoyed Shalimar the Clown. Also by Salman Rushdie and really long. I’ll have to add Midnight’s Children to my list.

Shalimar is pretty straight up, easy to understand. I just skipped when he was going on and on for certain descriptions. Other than that, I Loved it!

I tried on the Topshop dress that you linked and on me it looks like a robe. Perhaps if I was taller it would look better?
    Have a great weekend!

Out of topic but I was wondering whether you might be able to compare your AGL flats with the Nicholas Kirkwood Beya ones? Are they equally comfortable? I’m having trouble finding flats that will not kill the back of my heels.

Beyas are stiffer. Have you tried the Everlane mules? I LOVE mine and in fact just bought another pair. I often have discomfort like you and these are my favorites right now.

How are you liking the Boy Brow by Glossier so far? I’m thinking of buying it but was curious to find out if it is worth the plunge.

I was thinking of buying the Glossier eyelash mascara as well to qualify for free shipping. Apparently it is Emily Rata’s favorite.
