1. This week I have been eyeing this suede mule, by 3.1 Phillip Lim.

For some reason I’ve been buying sandals lately. Well, one pair (Prada, full price, ugh). I don’t know why I’ve been doing it. Because I’m sick of the cold? Anyway for some reason this mule was very interesting to me. I think it’s the combination of the color and the block heel and the slightly unique shape and how comfortable it looks. The only problem is I think it’s kind of a cool girl item and I’m not really a cool girl.

Another item I’ve been eyeing – this adorable swimsuit. Very cute, no? A friend pointed it out and I’ve had it on my wishlist since. It keeps coming in and out of stock.

2. A must read article, via The Hollywood Reporter, where Ellen Pompeo goes on the record in a way few actresses have done before about pay, negotiation, gender equality, and more.

3. I’m sure by now you have heard the news of Phoebe Philo leaving Celine, and being replaced by Hedi Slimane. What do you think? Me personally, I’m a little disappointed. I wish it had been another female designer. Here are two great articles, each by two of the best journalists in fashion: one by Cathy Horyn on what Phoebe Philo at Celine meant to her, and another by Vanessa Friedman on Celine and the “Grown Up Woman”.

4. A lovely and thoughtful article, via the WSJ, about what the perfect age is.

5. This week I am recommending Pachinko, by Min Jin Lee.

I actually finished Pachinko last year, but read it so quickly (two very late nights, and over the holidays) that I forgot about it by the time for a weekend update. What a gorgeous book. I usually gravitate towards contemporary versus historical fiction – the one exception is when historical is done really well. A multi-generational family saga set in both Korea and Japan, Pachinko was such a beautiful, engaging, well written read, that I’d gladly read more historical fiction if they were all as good as this. Highly, highly recommend Pachinko.

I saw the mules at Barneys on 5th ave marked down to only $120 (or some really good low price like that) in early Jan and tried them on. Not sure if I was really a fan of the look but it was one heck of a deal!

If you enjoyed Pachinko, you should try Free Food for Millionaires, the first book by Min Jin Lee. Not historical but well written and entertaining.
