Weekend Update

1. Did you get a coat this winter? I held out on all the coats I wanted (or they sold out before I was able to get to them) and I continue to consider this pink Theory coat.

The color is very pretty, no? And the cut is very nice – just a little bit boxy without being too oversized, and the length is nice and versatile. The only thing is I’m worried about such a big block of pink – if it was just a shade lighter I think it would be very easy. Still I’m really drawn to it and its already almost sold out everywhere. What do we think?

2. I know a few of you can relate to this, via The Economist – The Sad, Sick Life of the Business Traveler.

3. A fascinating article, via Racked, called Cartier Kings, about how Cartier sunglasses became one of the top status symbols in Detroit.

4. Another great travel related article, via The WSJ (FYI – paywall) about how travel agents are surviving and thriving in the age of DIY travel bookings online. Do you use an agent? I do.

5. This week, I am recommending an old favorite of mine from earlier in the year, Hunger by Roxane Gay.

I’ve purchased this book multiple times to give as gifts and only last week realized I had never posted about it on my blog. I read almost everything that Roxane Gay does – her books, her reviews, her Twitter feed, her new NY Times advice column – she’s just one of those writers whose opinions and style of writing I find easy to read and connect with. Hunger is exactly how it is described – its a memoir/autobiography, done in a series of short, elegant essays – of her life and body, and I found it a fascinating, touching, and absorbing read. Highly recommended.

Super cute. Get just to try it out, it won’t hurt. The style and color works well with a lot a lot of things – kind of a summery neutral. If it doesn’t fit right you could try that same color in a sweater, scarf, etc. I also find myself more drawn to pinks these days instead of my normal blue.

I actually just today finally got the coat I’ve been eyeing this season in the color vibrant flame: https://www.jcrew.com/p/womens_special_sizes/petite/outerwearblazers/petite-lodge-coat-in-italian-stadiumcloth-wool/H2770?color_name=hthr-acorn
I definitely don’t need more coats, but thought this was such a cheery color for winter (though my brother and husband said I look like a traffic cone in it). I really like this shade of pink for the Theory coat-definitely unexpected but still classy with some nice winter whites and grays!

That pink is a bit Pepto Bismol for me. But if it’s on Net a Porter, you can order it and try it at home, right?

Those articles were such an interesting read – never knew Cartier sunglasses were a thing, amazing.

The pink coat looks like fun! What colors would you pair it with?

Happy New Year, Katherine! I LOVE the pink coat, but I think you have to be a major pink lover to go for such a vibrant coat! I agree that if it was just toned down a bit, it might work better. However, I am imagining that your love for outerwear means that you have quite a number of coats already in your closet! So why not add this one for occasional use? See, I’m a major enabler. 😉
Roxane Gay is one of my favorite writers of all time. She wrote a novel called An Untamed State that was very, very difficult to read because of the subject matter. I think she is so bright and such an important voice. Hunger was emotionally painful to read, but that’s kind of what you get with Roxane. I just love this gal that I have never met!
Will read the Cartier article. The rise of Supreme has reminded me that absolutely ANYTHING can become sought-after and “fashionable”.

Thanks for including the link about travel agents! I’ve never used a travel agent, but starting to think it would be a good idea. Can you recommend an agent or website?
