Weekend Update

1. You know which bag I’ve gotten a lot more use out of than I thought? My Simon Miller nubuck bucket bag. I like it so much that I am now considering a second bag from the brand, this mini nubuck tote.

While I like the shape of the bucket a tad bit more, this mini tote has a big advantage to it: it fits a larger iPhone, unlike the adorable mini bucket, in which the phone visibly sticks out. And I love the green color! Perfect year round and a gorgeous contrast against neutrals.

2. This article is my favorite this week, via The Atlantic, Paying For Fake Friends And Family. I’d read a whole book from this man. I always find Japanese businesses like these so fascinating and at some level quite poignant.

3. Did you know this was going on? The Victoria’s Secret Show in Shanghai is apparently a disaster, according to The NY Post. And now Katy Perry has been banned!

4. I thought this article, via The NY Times, Furla and Longchamp: Quiet Surprise Stories. I don’t have any Furla (but have admired quite a few designs), but love Longchamp. I love what the brand’s management says about a commitment to reasonable pricing. Reminds me that I should get one of the Neo crossbodys for a great mommy bag option.

5. This week I finished Ginny Moon, by Benjamin Ludwig.

I really enjoyed Ginny Moon, which reminded me a lot of Room in some aspects. Like Room, it’s told from the perspective of a child – this one the fourteen year old autistic Ginny Moon. A very engaging, well written read – I highly recommend Ginny Moon.

Great article about Longchamp and Furla. I must admit, I’d be hard pressed to choose a favorite between my Hermes Kelly and Longchamp tote! Longchamp products have continued to be such great quality, especially given the price!

Interesting article about longchamp and Furla. My fav longchamp are the neo le Pliage handbags. I highly recommend the longchamp neo crossbody! I am not a mommy but I’m always on the run and the bag fits enough and is convenient to tote around everywhere. I use and abuse it almost everyday and it still looks pretty new.

I found the article about renting family members quite interesting. You always find articles that are so compelling. But what I find even more impressive is that you are still able to find time to read. Do you ever sleep?

    Dear Katherine,

The article about renting actors in Japan was utterly and simply fascinating.

If he comes out with a book I know you will let us know!

What’s so sad is how true some of the things he’d say – e.g. child not being admitted into a school due to being fatherless, being outcasted at school by your peers due to having only one parent, etc. etc.

It really makes one wonder if that adage, “image is everything,” still holds true regarding social stations at work and play. I don’t know about you but I have heard of people being passed over because they weren’t as “settled” or “married” etc. which I thought was ridiculous, but I am sure it happens more often than not.

Here’s to hoping for some open-minded changes!

    xx

I love the Longchamp Neo. I actually only own Neos from them and none of their standard Pliage line. There’s something about the monochromatic style that speaks to me. Oh and the sturdiness!

Hi Kat – thank you for sharing the article about VS show. I read it and laughed at the sensitivity of the Chinese government and let it pass. This past thanks-giving, however, another incidence happened, which is deeply troubling and how the government handled it is beyond despairing. I am from China. After Trump got elected, i seriously thought about returning. But no I won’t. I am just reminded how dark the dark can be there and how for some people they might never see sunlight. This is the article about the incidence. http://beta.latimes.com/world/asia/la-fg-china-kindergarten-abuse-20171124-story.html. The insider scoop was that the principle of this particular branch has tie to a high ranking army officer. The owner of a big shareholder of the education group is family to a high central government official, like very high. It sounded very much like an organized chid abuse/molester crime: principle of the kindergarten drugged up the children and provided them to some uncles/grandpas… The government, over two days, was able to shut all Chinese news channel reporting on this, banned public platform discussions and even made celebrities apologize for voicing support and concern over this! Now I worry something might happen to the parents of the victims if they continue to share more information on social media! The official government investigation announcement was: one teacher was found abusive and has been arrested, people who disclosed about the ties were making things up and were arrested and forced to apologize and clarify things up publicly. And that’s it! End of story! The alleged child molester/abuse/rape doesn’t exist!
This is outraging! And as a mom, it is unbearable!
Yet, this will pass. No justice. No laws will pass because of this.
Sorry for ranting so much about something totally irrelevant here. I just need to share it so more people will know.
