Weekend Update

1. Sharing the cutest little pair of gingham sandals (which actually seem like they have some level of decent padding for comfort), from Sam Edelman, for under $100.

I have exactly one pair of gingham shoes and they get me the most compliments out of any of my other shoes. This pair is actually quite versatile given its flat profile, and it reminds me a lot of something you’d find from say, Miu Miu, but at a price point where you won’t cry if a drink spills on it. Very cute!

2. This amazing, and wonderfully candid interview with Lucinda Chambers, the fashion director for twenty five years at British Vogue, who was recently fired. How bad do you think that Michael Kors t-shirt was? And interesting bit about her not having read Vogue herself in years…do any of you still read the magazine?

3. An interesting (if a little long) article via Racked, How To Sell a Billion Dollar Myth Like a French Girl. Are you susceptible to “Frenchie” things?

4. Who pays on a first date? Are you a traditionalist, or do you offer to split? Loved this funny article via the Wall Street Journal on this topic.

5. This week, I read The Thirst, by Jo Nesbo.

If you like crime series (especially of the Norwegian variety), chances are you’ve already read one or all of the Harry Hole series (if not – please start! And I’m jealous of all the great new reading you have to come!).  The Thirst, like almost all of Jo Nesbo’s books I’ve read (and I’ve read them all), does not disappoint. Highly recommend The Thirst to anyone looking for a thriller/fast paced crime read, and especially if you’re already a “Holehead”.

Loved the french girl article! I am totally guilty of this.
Also, I have NEVER thought I could wear a jumpsuit (petite/pear shaped), but this one actually looks flattering and comes in petite sizes! Thanks for sharing.
Hope you’re feeling good in these last weeks before your due date.

Try the jumpsuit! I’ve had it bookmarked for a while. I think it looks like a great weekend piece. Thank you!

Kat, I always find it delightful to see new posts from you. Thank you for the wonderful articles you have pointed out for your readers. I feel smarter after reading the articles you suggested. I know how hard it is managing a toddler and being pregnant with the second one, so I take my hats off that you still blog regularly! Thank you again!

    Hi Kat,

I thought Lucinda Chambers was incredibly frank in her interview. She came across very well in the documentary about UK Vogue that was on TV a while ago. It’ll be interesting to see what she does next.

    Have a lovely weekend,
    Xx

I always love your book recommendations and love a good crime novel. Do you think I should start with the first book, The Bat? Some of the reviews I’ve read said if they had started with that one, they might not have kept on. Curious to know your thoughts.

I also love a good spy novel and one of my favorite series is the Gabriel Allon series written by Daniel Silva. I highly recommend.

Hmm, interesting! To be honest, I read the initial ones so long ago that I can’t remember. I don’t think I first read them in order, because the Bat wasn’t translated for a while – so I might try one of the earlier (but not earliest) ones first, and then go back to The Bat.

Thank you for Silva! I’ve had it on my list for a while, I need to try that series out.

Yes try The Bat, but it’s different from the others in that it’s set in Australia. It almost stands alone, so you could start with the second one and read The Bat anytime without missing out.

I completely forgot about that! Great feedback, thank you!

I find the best way to see the difference amongst women of different nationalities is to watch the news – how the femail tv anchor is dressed and groomed says a lot about how the women of her country approach beauty and fashion.
For example the US news anchors are always impeccably dressed and groomed, a bit too much sometimes, whereas the French tv anchors are equally well dressed but always in more casual way. Katherine, if you have time, please have a look at the news and let me know what do you think 🙂

It’s too bad Vestoj had to amend their Lucinda Chambers interview, but the original is still available via the Wayback Machine. Thanks so much for the suggestion!

I just read about the amendment! Shame but the info is all out there anyway.

It wasn’t a big change. Vestoj basically removed the part in the beginning on how Lucinda Chambers’ firing was a total surprise to everyone except the new editor.

I’m not sure about Edward Enninful – do we need or want a man as editor of a women’s fashion magazine? Would it be acceptable to have a female editor of GQ? It also seems as though he treated Lucinda Chambers badly.

I read and enjoyed the French Girl article and the Lucinda interview and have enjoyed the comments here as well. I’m looking forward to the Harry Hole novels greatly! Does anything catch your eye for the upcoming Nordstrom Anniversary Sale?

I don’t enjoy Vogue as much as I used to! I like Harper’s Bazaar more. I want to see more clothes, shoes , etc… That’s what I buy fashion magazines for. I thought the British Vogue cover with Alexa Chung was
pretty. I feel bad that Lucinda was let go. However, I understand that the advertisers have to be appeased. That is probably where the biggest chunk of magazine money is made.

I thought the original Lucinda Chambers interview was actually quite a bit more strongly worded than what is up there now. Here it is: https://web.archive.org/web/20170705223701/http://vestoj.com/will-i-get-a-ticket/
